WASHINGTON - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team got out to a slow start on Saturday afternoon as the host Catholic University Cardinals raced out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and were able to hold off a furious rally from the Devils in the third en route to collecting a 16-11 non-conference win at Carlini Field.
- An early stop by Sierra McLaughlin on Jessie Lee led to Abby Geary setting up Jenna Nowland for the early 1-0 lead just 1:22 in.
- The Cardinals then found their offensive footing recording seven of the next eight shots with five of them sliding past McLaughlin to take a 5-1 lead with 3:35 left.
- After Ali Broome claimed the following draw control the rock eventually made its way to Faith Parker who was able to stash a shot beyond the reach of Alexandra Ragano.
- However, Lindsay Sawyer would cap the scoring for the period in the final minute to take a 6-2 lead to the second.
- The Red and White would use an early power play opportunity to trim one off the gap thanks to Delaney Herbert finding Sage Whiteside for the finish, but Catholic answered with back-to-back Henley Bredemann goals to make it 8-3 at the 3:20 mark.
- Just over two minutes later a yellow card issued to Tori Wilsey gave Whiteside the ability to pick up a power play marker off a free-position chance.
- After Bredemann struck again to push the gap to 9-4, both Parker and Herbert solved Ragano closing the score at the half to 9-6.
- Peyton VanDorpe went between the pipes for the Red and White to open the period as immediately was called into action denying Wilsey, which allowed Mia Seergae to get the ball to Parker for the Devils seventh of the day with just two minutes gone (9-7).
- Catholic took the next four shots, but could not best VanDorpe.
- Dickinson used the next five shots to find two goals thanks to Nowland and Whiteside (Carson Cerow assist) drawing level at 9-9 with 5:40 off the clock.
- Unfortunately for the Devils, the home side responded in a big way going on a four-goal run before Bella Guckes tallied with 20 ticks left to leave it at 13-10 after three.
- It took nearly four minutes to see the first goal as Bredemann made it 14-10.
- Herbert had two solid looks for the Red and White over the next few minutes, but one just missed the mark and the other rang the iron.
- However, Herbert eventually did strike when a stop by VanDorpe on Peyton Wozniak sent the Devils out in transition allowing Guckes to hit her for the finish (14-11).
- Dickinson could get no closer as Maggie Traynor and Lee each collected a goal to set the 16-11 final.
