Red Devils Sweep Green Terror in Baseball Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson baseball team rallied past host McDaniel College, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth inning to overtake the Green Terror, 8-7, in Saturday's season opener. They had hot bats in the second game as well, sweeping the series with a 16-4 win.

The Green Terror scored lone runs in each of the first four innings to take a 4-1 lead. The Red Devils answered with a run in the third as first-year Derek Smith (New Hope, Pa./New Hope-Solebury) doubled to score Tom Gannaway (Westfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep).

Dickinson tied the game with three more in the sixth inning. First-year Christian Kim (Rivervale, N.J./Pascack Hills) doubled down the left field line to score two runs and Colin Jones (Herndon, Va./Herndon) drove in another with a single.

McDaniel answered with run in the sixth and scored twice in the eighth to pull in front, 7-4.

The Red Devils would rally in the ninth, however, as Smith led-off with a single and quickly moved to third with a pair of wild pitches.

After Brendan Pell (Delran, N.J./Penn Charter) drew a walk, Andrew Mazzone (Belmont, Mass./Phillips Academy Andover) singled to score Smith and cut the deficit to 7-5. Pell and Mazzone moved over on another wild pitch before first-year Kenny Tagliareni (Hopewell Valley, N.J./Hopewell Valley) singled to pull Dickinson within a run.

Tagliareni stole to give the Red Devils runners on second and third. That set up a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lukas Atsalis (West Hyannis Port, Mass./Berkshire School) to tie the game.

Tyler Scaff (Floral Park, N.J./Hanover Park) singled up the middle to put Dickinson on top, 8-7, setting the stage for junior Beau Dana (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) to come on and close, recording a pair of strikeouts in the bottom half of the inning.

Smith had a great start to his collegiate career, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles. Mazzone went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI while Skaff and Gannaway each recorded a pair of hits in the opener.

Ben Stoopack (Brooklyn, N.Y./Institute for Collaborative Education) and Matt Spind (Clarksville, Md./McDonogh) combined for eight strikeouts in the first eight innings before Dana came on to earn the win.

The Red Devils jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap, scoring six runs on seven hits in the second inning. Gannaway led the way with a two-run triple while Smith, Scaff, Pell and Mark Place (Hartford, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) added RBI singles.

A two-run double helped McDaniel cut the lead in half, scoring three in the bottom of the inning.

Jones drove in a run and came across with Kim on a two-run single from Scaff to put the Red Devils on top, 9-3, in the fourth. They added three more in the eighth, capitalizing on walks and some timely singles from Atsalis and Place to extend the lead.

McDaniel got one back in the bottom of the inning, but the Red Devils would erupt with a grand slam from Kim for the final of 16-4.

Kim finished 3-for-4 with four runs-scored, four RBI and a pair of walks. Atsalis was 3-for-4 while Scaff and Place each had three hits and combined for five RBI.

Ethan Hamilton (Wyndmoor, Pa./Springfield Twp.) earned the win, going 4.2 innings while allowing four hits and recording four strikeouts. Joey Sangiuolo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Warde) and Brian Riley (Portland, Maine/Portland) combined for five strikeouts in relief.

The Red Devils face McDaniel in game two of the double-header. They return home next Saturday to host Johns Hopkins University at 12:00 pm.
