Early Runs Lead Saints to Saturday Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(Washington, D.C.) – The Dickinson baseball team traveled to Washington, D.C. for a double-header with Marymount University at the Nationals Youth Baseball Academy on Saturday. The Saints jumped out early in both halves of the twin-bill to claim game one 11-6 and the nightcap 5-0.

Marymount put four runs in the board in the bottom of the first inning behind a two-RBI double from Ryan Maylie and a two-run homer off the bat of Casey Baker.

Mike Ferrara double in a run and scored to stretch the lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the second.

The Red Devils added lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings to cut the deficit to 6-2. Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) scored on a single from Pat Davis (New Providence, N.J./Morristown-Beard) and Pat Harrington (Long Valley, N.J./Delbarton) drove in Tom Gannaway (Westfield, N.J./St. Peter's Prep) with a single through the right side.

Marymount added five in the bottom half of the inning, capped by a two-RBI single from Ferrara for an 11-2 advantage.

The Red Devils rallied in the sixth, loading the bases for a two-RBI double off the bat of Cole Benner (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville), scoring Cole Hare (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley) and Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro).

Chris Delsandro (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) drove in Brendan Pell (Delran, N.J./Penn Charter) and Benner came in to score on a wild pitch to make the scored 11-6. Harrington singled again and came around to score on a base-hit from Matilsky to put the Red Devils right back in the thick of things.

Pell reached in the seventh, but the Saints closed out the inning to take game one 11-7.

Five Red Devils had multiple hits in the opener as they combined to hammer out four doubles. Alex Cohen (Newtown Square, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Pell each went 2-for-3 while Gannaway, Harrington and Matilsky finished 2-for-4.

Baker homered in the bottom of the first of game two to give the Saints another early lead. Bryan Harris hit a three-run homer in the third to put Marymount in front 5-0.

That would be all the scoring in the nightcap as the Red Devils were held to just four hits. Cohen went 2-for-3 with a double while Joey Volpe (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) went 2-for-3 as well.

Marcus Thompson (Foothill Ranch, Calif./Trabuco Hills) scattered five hits while recording seven strikeouts in a solid five-inning effort.

The Red Devils move to 1-3 in the season. They return to Carlisle for their home opener on Sunday, hosting a double-header with Juniata College. Opening pitch for game one is set for 11:00 am.
