Hopkins Breaks Conference Runners-Caught-Stealing Record

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team rallied past visiting McDaniel College for a 4-2 win to split the series on Friday afternoon.

The Green Terror scored twice in the top of the sixth inning as Kasey Nelson hit a solo shot to put McDaniel on the board and Tim Griest singled and scored on an RBI from Mike Dunn.

The Red Devils capitalized on a pair of errors after senior Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College) reached on an error, recording an RBI while Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) reached on an error and came in to score as well.

The Red Devils pulled in front in the seventh as junior Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./The Pennington School) launched a shot over the right field wall for a 3-2 advantage.

Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh) singled and moved to third on an error and a passed ball. He came in to score an insurance run as Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) hit a double into left center.

Sumners went 2-for-5 while Hopkins and Brown each went 2-for-4 on the day. Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) added a pair of hits, including a double in the fifth.

Ben Rappaport (Wilton, Conn./St. Luke's) had a strong start on the hill, going five innings and allowing run. Alex Gusikoff (Ardmore, Pa./Malvern Prep) recorded three strikeouts in three innings to earn the win while Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) came on to close, earning the save behind a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.

Hopkins broke the Centennial Conference career record with 51 runners-caught-stealing. He also tied the conference mark, throwing out 21 steal attempts this season with his 21st of the year this afternoon.

The Red Devils improve to 17-13 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Washington College tomorrow for a 12:30 double-header in Chestertown, Maryland.
