Box Score (Frederick, Md.) – The Dickinson baseball team broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fifth inning on the way to a 6-2 win at Hood College on Wednesday.
Sophomore Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./The McDonogh School) drew a two-out walk in the second inning and came in to score on a triple by junior Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./The Pennington School) to put Dickinson on the board first.
The Mustangs tied the game with a solo homer from Josh Gall in the fourth inning.
The Red Devils had a big fifth, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Brown singled to lead-off the inning and Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) drew a walk to set up a two-run double from Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College).
Band came in to score on a sacrifice bunt from Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill).
Hood pushed across an unearned run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 4-2. Brown launched a solo shot in the sixth and Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) singled, stole second and scored on a double from first-year Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) for the final of 6-2.
Brown went 2-for-3, scoring three runs while Hopkins and Matilsky went 2-for-4 on the day. Billy O'Neil (South Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) earned the win on the hill, going six innings and allowing just one earned run while recording three strikeouts.
Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) recorded a pair of strikeouts in two innings of relief while Alex Gusikoff (Ardmore Pa./Malvern Prep) faced four batters to close in the ninth.
The Red Devils improve to 4-2 on the season. They head to Florida for spring break and are scheduled to face Centenary University in a double-header on Saturday with game one set for 12:30 pm.
