Red Devils Rally, Fall Short 5-3

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team looked to rally, loading the bases and scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but visiting Johns Hopkins was able to hold on to sweep the series with a 5-3 win on Friday afternoon at MacPhail Field.

The Blue Jays capitalized on an error and a wild pitch to score an unearned run in the second inning and took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from Raul Shah in the third.

The Devils pushed a run across in the bottom of the fourth after Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) reached on an error and came around on back-to-back singles from Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) and Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School).

Shah tallied another RBI for the Blue Jays as they tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fifth and Ryan Orgielewicz added a solo homerun in the eighth to stretch the lead to 5-1.

The Red Devils put the rally caps on in the ninth as senior Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) led-off the inning with a triple. Primavera hit a double to left center to score Dolan and came around on a pinch-hit RBI single by Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College) to cut the deficit to 5-3.

First-year Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) reached on an error and classmate Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing Area) drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Mike Smith bobbled a shot to third but was able to make the throw in time to end the inning and the game for Hopkins.

Primavera went 1-for-4 with a double and reached on an error, adding an RBI and two runs scored to lead the Devils at the plate.

Nick Burns went 8.1 innings with six strikeouts to earn the win on the hill. The Blue Jays improve to 14-9-1 overall and stand even in the Centennial Conference at 2-2. The Red Devils slip to 2-2 in the CC and 15-9 overall.

Dickinson is scheduled to travel to Haverford College on Sunday for a 12:30 pm double-header. That twin-bill was postponed from Saturday when weather conditions are expected to be more favorable.
