(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson baseball team went back-and-forth with McDaniel College on Wednesday, but dropped the Centennial Conference match-up, 5-3.
The Green Terror struck first, scoring once in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler O'Shea drew a lead-off walk and came in to score off a sacrifice bunt and RBI single from Marty Windishch.
The Red Devils answered in the top of the six, taking a 2-1 lead. Sophomore Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) led-off the inning with a base-hit and stole second. He moved to third as Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) reached on an error.
Dolan came in to score and Parker would come across off the bat of Travis Nardin (Montville, Pa./Morristown Friends).
The Green Terror capitalized on a two-out error in the bottom of the sixth, plating three unearned runs to retake the lead, 4-2. Kasey Nelson doubled to score two runs and came in on a RBI single from Cody Dorsey.
McDaniel tacked on another insurance run in the seventh as Sean Sivo singled, stole second and came around on a base-hit from Camerons Barr.
The Devils got one back in the seventh as senior Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) singled and stole second to set up another RBI opportunity for Nardin. The first-year delivered with a double to left field, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
Zach Kronick came on to close, recording a pair of strikeouts in the ninth. The Devils threatened with back-to-back singles by Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) and Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's). McDaniel would hold, claiming the first game of the series, 5-3.
Nardin finished with a pair of RBIs while Haynes went 2-for-4 on the day while Dolan was 2-for-5 with a triple. Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) tossed a solid game for the Devils, going all eight innings, allowing just two earned runs while surrendering one walk and recording five strikeouts.
Nelson led the way for McDaniel (11-12, 4-7 CC) with two hits, including a two-RBI double. Ben Van Put went eight innings to earn the win on the hill for McDaniel.
The Red Devils slip to 10-16-1 overall and 4-6-1 in the Centennial Conference. The teams are scheduled to meet again on Friday when the Green Terror come to Carlisle for a 3:30 start.
