Red Devils Rally for 1-1 Draw at Swarthmore

Box Score

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team traveled to Swarthmore College on Saturday night for what has evolved into a great series for nearly the past decade. The trend continued as the teams played to a grueling, 1-1, overtime draw.

The match remained scoreless throughout the first half with both teams trading possessions in the midfield.

The second half started with a quick yellow card on the Garnet as a late tackle led to a caution for xxx.

The Devils drew a free kick on the end line and senior Alfred Hylton-Dei (Geneva, Switzerland/Mercersburg Academy, Pa.) bent a shot on goal but goaltender Tyler Zon made a strong save on the near post.

The Garnet had a strong chance on the counter, leading the first save of the game for junior Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) and a corner for Swarthmore. The Devils cleared another dangerous chance on a well-place serve.

Billy Evers put another strong shot on the net, but Palcan tipped it away. Evers would tally an assist on the corner, feeding a header to Michael Nafziger.

The Red Devils countered immediately with a strong attack of their own, forcing a corner on the other end, but Zon came away with the save.

Sophomore Chris Pollock (Salem, Va./North Cross) made a great move to volley past two defenders but his shot was just wide of the post. The Devils continued to maintain possession and were generating scoring chances as they looked to net the equalizer.

Swarthmore took more of a defensive posture, but would counter with an attack if given the opportunity. Dickinson capitalized on a free-kick as Hylton-Dei served a ball to first-year Ward Van de Water (Warrenton, Va./Highland) for a beautiful one-timer into the back of the net.

Palcan turned away another strong chance with just over a minute remaining, leading to another Garnet corner. The Devils gained possession and forced a corner with just seconds on the clock. Swarthmore was able to clear the ball, sending the match into overtime.

Dickinson came out aggressive to open the first overtime. The Devils forced four corners in the first three minutes to keep the pressure on the Swarthmore end of the field.

Zon made a huge save after a great give and go, and nice touch pass by Hylton-Dei. The teams slugged it out through the remainder of overtime, playing to a 1-1 draw.

Palcan finished with seven saves, making two in the second overtime. Swarthmore held a slight, 14-13, shot advantage while the Devils forced 13 corners while allowing just four.

Swarthmore moves to 6-7-3 overall and 2-2-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils stand at 9-3-3 and 3-1-3 in the conference. The Red Devils return home to host Muhlenberg College at 7:00 pm on Wednesday night.
