Primavera Drives in Game-Winner as Devils Top Terror 3-2

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to overtake McDaniel, 3-2, in Centennial Conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils struck first, manufacturing a run in the bottom of the second inning. Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and came in to score on a double down the left field line by first-year Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill).

The Green Terror threatened in the top of the third but sophomore pitcher Zee Crawford (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) closed the door, avoiding any runs.

The Devils added another run in the fifth. First-year Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) singled, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. He came hard down the line to score on a wild pitch, extending the lead to 2-0.

McDaniel answered with one in the top of the seventh. Jonathan McKinney reached on fielder's choice and advanced to second on an error. He scored from second on another Devil miscue to put the Green Terror on the board.

Sean Sivo singled, but a strong throw from Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) prevented the tying run from scoring, keeping the score, 2-1.

McDaniel capitalized on another error in the eighth to plate the tying run. The Red Devils were facing a first-and-third situation with two outs as the Terror broke early, looking to score on a double-steal. A strong play by relief pitcher Tyler Clauson-Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and a great tag by catcher Hank Sanders (Wellesville, Pa./Northern) preserved the tie as they got the runner at home.

The score held until the bottom of the ninth when Haynes and Primavera would connect again for the game-winner. Haynes singled, but was still on first with two outs in the inning. He stole second and Primavera hit a line shot over the head of the left fielder and Haynes came around to score to give the Devils the win.

Haynes went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Primavera went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

Jonathan McKinney led McDaniel (18-14, 7-7 CC), going 2-for-4 with a runs scored. David Pisauro went the distance on the mound, scattering seven hits and recording four strikeouts.

Crawford went 7.2 innings, allowing just five hits and recording six strikeouts. Clauson-Wolf booked two strikeouts in 1.1 innings of work to earn the win.

The Red Devils (12-21, 3-11 CC) are home again on Tuesday, hosting Muhlenberg College at 3:30 pm.
