(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team battled with #17-ranked Johns Hopkins, falling 6-3, at MacPhail Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Blue Jays started things off in the top of the second inning, pushing across three runs with a pair of walks and two doubles in the inning. Ryan Zakszeski doubled into left center to score a pair of runs and put Hopkins on the board. Adam Weiner added a sacrifice fly to scored Chris Casey for a 3-0 lead.
The Devils answered with a pair in the bottom half of the inning. Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) was hit by a pitch to start the inning. He came in to score as Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) hit a double down the left field line.
Tursi stole third and came in to score as Luke Besse (Marston Mills, Mass./Barnstable) reached on an error by the pitcher to pull the Devils within one.
Zakszeski led-off the fifth inning with a single and later came around to score off the bat of Jeff Lynch to stretch the lead to 4-2.
The Devils got one back in the seventh as Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) doubled down the left field line and came in on a single from Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley).
Hopkins added lone insurance runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings for the final of 6-3. Hank Sanders (Wellesville, Pa./Northern) added a two-out double in the ninth but would be stranded at second.
Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) went five innings on the mound, recording three strikeouts. He combined with Tyler Clausen-Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) and Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) to allow just seven hits on the day.
Six different Devils recorded hits. Tursi led the way with a hit, run scored and an RBI.
Zakszeski went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored to lead Hopkins as they improved to 18-2 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial Conference.
The Red Devils slip to 9-12 overall and 0-3 in the conference. They are home again on Saturday, hosting a double-header with Haverford at 12:30 pm.
