(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson baseball team rallied but dropped a 9-6 decision at McDaniel College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Green Terror took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, scoring an unearned run on a walk an error and a pair of ground outs.
The Devils answered quickly as Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) singled and immediately came in to score on a double from Sam Wachs (Severna Park, Md./Severn School).
The Green Terror scored four in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-1 lead. They went up, 7-1, on an RBI triple and a sacrifice fly.
The Devils strung together four hits, scoring two runs in the fifth inning. Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) doubled to score one run while Benn Parker () scored off the bat of Hank Sanders (Wellesville, Pa./Northern).
The Devils added two more in the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-5. Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) homered and Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) reached third on an error, scoring on a sacrifice fly from Sanders.
McDaniel used a homerun, double and a single to stretch the lead to 9-5, in the bottom of the ninth. Helmandollar drew a walk, stole second and moved to third on an error in the ninth. He scored off another sacrifice RBI from Sanders for the final of 9-6.
Helmandollar went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a homerun. Haynes and Tursi both went 3-for-5 . Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) suffered the loss, going six innings and recording four strikeouts. Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) came on for two innings of relief.
The Red Devils slip to 11-19 overall and 2-9 in the conference. They travel to Messiah College on Wednesday for a 3:30 start.
