(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson College baseball team dropped a heartbreaker on Friday as McDaniel rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth to overtake the Red Devils, 7-6.
The Terror completed the series sweep with the win. Marshall Betts singled up the middle to score the winning run to close out the rally.
McDaniel scored one the in third inning, capitalizing on a Red Devil Error. The Devils answered in the fourth as senior Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) tripled and came in as Matt Tuneski (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) reached on an error.
The Devils stretched the lead to 4-1 in the fifth. Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Mt. Kisco) singled and scored off the bat of senior Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School). Haynes moved to third on a double from Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown). James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose) added a single to score both Horan and Rosa'.
Ricky LaSota doubled in a pair of runs to pull McDaniel within one in the bottom half of the inning. Haynes knocked-in a pair of runs in the eighth to give the Devils a 6-3 advantage.
First-year Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) surrendered a single to start the bottom of the eighth, but came back to post three straight strikeouts.
The Green Terror came alive in the ninth, pounding out five hits to score four runs for the win. Horan came from behind the plate to record a strikeout in the ninth. LaSota doubled and James Chiorello hit a ball of the middle that turned into a Red Devils error, allowing the tying run to score.
Betts came through with another single to plate the game-winner for McDaniel. Brandon Hayward led the Terror (17-8, 5-5), going 3-for-4 with two runs scored while LaSota added a pair of hits and five RBIs on the day.
Haynes went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBIs to pace the Devils at the plate. Kaufman went 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored. First-year Harley Moore (Deltaville, Va./Middlesex) went six innings in the start, recording nine strikeouts while scattering six hits and allowing just two earned runs. Helmandollar added five strikeouts in three innings of work.
The Red Devils slip to 17-11 overall and 4-6 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to face Franklin & Marshall in a conference double-header at MacPhail Field. First-pitch is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
