(Lancaster, Pa.) - The Dickinson College baseball team split a Centennial Conference double-header at Franklin & Marshall on Sunday afternoon. The Devils won the opener 6-4, but dropped the nightcap, 12-7.
The Devils jumped out to an early lead in game one. Evan Hennessy (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) singled and came in to score on an RBI single from Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School). Sophomore James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose) drew a walk and later scored off the bat of Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) to put Dickinson in front, 2-0, in the first inning.
The Devils tacked on three in the second as Mike Schuster (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) drove in Bart Marchant (Lakeville, Conn./Hotchkiss School) and Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) to stretch the lead to 4-0.
Schuster later came across on a sacrifice fly from Rosa' to give the Devils a 5-0 lead at the end of the second. Sterling doubled and scored on a single from Hennessy in the fourth to make the score 6-0.
The Diplomats looked to rally in the bottom of the sixth. They tightened things up, scoring four runs with the help of a two-RBI single from Mike Amabile. The Devils would hold, however, improving to 17-13 overall and 4-9 in the CC.
Sterling went 3-for-3 in the opener, scoring twice while Hennessy went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Rosa' added a pair of hits and two RBIs while Matt Tuneski (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) went 2-for-4.
Senior Evan Fitzpatrick (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) earned the win in a complete game effort, scattering four hits and allowing just one earned run.
Schuster led-off the nightcap with a double and scored on a RBI for Santoro. F&M capitalized on back-to-back doubles from Will Benenson and Eric Bornstein to take a 2-1 lead in the third inning.
The Diplomats added four runs in the fourth as Benenson tallied another RBI double in the inning. Aaron Gillette added a single, two stolen bases and run scored in the frame.
The Devils erupted for five runs in the sixth inning to tie the game, 6-6. Junior Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) and Sterling each recorded two-RBI singles to pull Dickinson even.
Three straight walks and a base-clearing double to trigger a six-run eighth for the Diplomats to put them up, 12-6. Sterling walked and later scored on a passed ball for the final of 12-7.
Sterling drove in two runs and scored once while Horan had a single, double and two RBIs. Schuster went 2-for-3, reaching on a walk and a hit-by-pitch to go with a double and a single. Hennessy and Kaufman each added a pair of hits in the nightcap as well.
The Red Devils stand at 17-14 and 4-10 in the conference. They travel to Penn State Harrisburg for non-conference tilt on Monday before returning home to host Muhlenberg College on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
