CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team played a strong opening 15 minutes on Wednesday night as goals from
Abby Geary,
Delaney Herbert and
Sage Whiteside had the Red and White trailing the seventh-ranked Gettysburg College Bullets by one 4-3. However, over the final 45 minutes the visitors outpaced the Devils 16-5 en route to a 20-8 Centennial Conference win at Biddle Field.
It took the Bullets just 2:02 into game to grab a 2-0 lead on a pair of markers from Jordan Basso. However, after a shot by
Liz Barroll rang the post,
Sage Whiteside collected the bouncing ball and stuffed it past Gill Corese. Then, just 22-ticks later the game was knotted up as Barroll found Herbert for the score. Following a stop by Cortese on
Faith Parker, the Bullets had the next five shots with
Peyton VanDorpe making a pair of saves before Basso setup Julia Daly for a 3-2 edge. Dickinson was even once again just over a minute later when Geary picked up an unassisted tally with 7:07 left in the first. A home foul with 11:04 off the clock led to a free-position chance for Gettysburg with Maddie Passarello stashed the rock beyond the reach of VanDorpe to grab a 4-3 lead. The Red and White had two chances prior to the end of the frame to tie the score, but
Bella Guckes was blocked by the defense and Geary hit the post to lead it at 4-3 through one.
A pair of early turnovers for Dickinson to begin the second resulted in three consecutive shots for the Bullets resulting in a goal by Sophie Smith with 10:34 remaining. Unfortunately, for the Devils that was the start of a five-goal Gettysburg run with tallies coming from Meghan Crane, Basso and Passarello (2) to extend the margin to 9-3 with just over five minutes left. A giveaway by Crane allowed Barroll to find Geary for the finish, but Lauren O'Connell and Daly answered right back to open up a seven-goal cushion at (11-4) with 13:20 gone. The Red and White recorded their second and final shot of the period with just four-seconds left as
Emma Wynne cashed in on a free-position opportunity closing to 11-5 heading to the break.
Dickinson attempted to carry the momentum into the early part of the third, but Cortese denied Herbert at the 40-second mark. Then, over the next eight minutes the Gettysburg defense was lockdown as they did not allow DC shot during that time while racking up seven straight goals to make it 18-5 with 6:30 remaining. The two teams traded the next four shots with Geary and Parker going wide of the target, while Crane and O'Connell tasked VanDorpe into making one stop ending the period.
The fourth quarter began with the Devils chipping into the deficit as Barroll (Herbert assist), Herbert (free-position) and Whiteside (Barroll assist) pulled the home side to within 18-8 with five minutes off the clock. Two minutes later, VanDorpe had the answer for both Basso and Passarello, but Julie Breedveld and Caroline Sullivan each put the rock in the back of the net to make it 20-8 at the 10:26 mark. After
Izzy Hall jarred the rock loose from Basso, VanDorpe fed it ahead to Herbert who got two looks at new keeper Juliette Devarenne she could not force her into a save as the game came to an end.
