Devils Show They Belong With the Conference Elite in Split With #10 Blue Jays

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team took advantage of their home field and windy conditions on Saturday afternoon to show they belong with not only the best in the Centennial Conference, but they can compete with anyone as they split a massive conference doubleheader with the 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins University at MacPhail Field. The Devils came out on top in game one 5-4, before suffering a bit of an emotional letdown in game two falling 4-1.

Game One (DEVILS 5, #10 Blue Jays 4)
Records: Johns Hopkins - 20-7, 8-1 CC | Dickinson - 18-7, 6-2 CC
Time of Game: 2:52
Pitching Decision: W - Joey Sangiuolo (2-0) | L - Matt Savedoff (1-3)

Inside the Game
The visitors were out of the gates quick against DC starter Austin Buzza as a single and walk set the stage for a one-out two-run double by Dillion Souvignier. Buzza then settled down to get a lineout and popout to end the rally. Then in the bottom of the first, the home side got to Hopkins pitcher Kieren Collins when a single for Kenny Tagliareni and walk to Dylan Posencheg reached to begin things. Following a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Thompson, Kaden Sigmon plated one with a grounder to first, before Chase Weller dumped a single into left tying the game at 2-2 heading to the second. Dickinson would grab the lead for the first time in the game during the home-half of the frame. Johnny Bruno walked to start things off with one away. Three batters later Thompson stepped into the box and ripped an RBI single to left for a 3-2 edge entering the third. That was when the Jays drew level as Alex Shane singled prior to being driven in on a base hit for Caleb Cyr. Buzza worked around any further damage with a lineout and double play. Both teams pitchers locked in over the next couple of innings as the game stayed locked at 3-3 going to the last of the fifth.

A knock for Sigmon and error by JHU put two on with no outs. After a balk moved both men into scoring position, Luke Gartland provided a sac fly to right making it 4-3. Unfortunately, Dickinson could not muster anything else as a walk and single loaded the bags, but Tagliareni popped up to short for the last out. The visitors took advantage of a single, double and balk by Sangiuolo to scratch across the tying run in their half of sixth. Hopkins went in search of a go-ahead marker during the top of the eighth as Cyr was hit by a pitch to start things off. He then went to second on a groundout and third on a balk bringing Shawn Steurer to the dish. He would flyout to center for the second out, which Cyr appeared to think was deep enough to score but Posencheg threw a bullet to the catcher Thompson who applied the tag for the final out. An error by the second baseman and a pair of groundouts allowed Tagliareni to reach third setting the stage for Sigmon to leg-out an RBI infield single making it 5-4 going to the ninth. Two walks gave the Jays life, but Sangiuolo worked around them with a pickoff, groundout and strikeout to seal up the win.

Devils Mound Report
Buzza took a tough no-decision after going the first 5.1 innings allowing six hits and four runs (three earned), while striking out three. Sangiuolo earned the victory with 3.2 frames of no-hit shutout relief to go along with a pair of Ks.

Game Two (#10 Blue Jays 4, DEVILS 1)
Records: Johns Hopkins - 21-7, 9-1 CC | Dickinson - 18-8, 6-3 CC
Time of Game: 2:14
Pitching Decision: W - Quinn Rovner (4-1) | L - Koll Peichel (5-1) | S - William Boneno (2)

Inside the Game
Following a scoreless first the visitors would get on the board in the second as a single and walk left men on the corners with two down for Seif Ingram. He hit a towering popup on the infield right around the mound where Gartland came charging in and appeared to make the catch, but when he hit the ground the ball popped out of the glove allowing for the man from third to score for the 1-0 lead. Hopkins collected two more in the third off of Peichel thanks to three consecutive doubles, before a groundout and double play wrapped up the inning. On the other end of the board the Dickinson offense was being completely baffled by Rovner as he set down the first 15 men he faced to carry a perfect game into the home-half of the sixth. Gartland became the 16th-consecutive batter retired by Rovner, before he lost the perfect game bid with a walk to Christian Kim. However, a groundout and popout stalled any hope of a rally. The Red and White finally got to the Jays pitcher during the seventh as singles for Posencheg and Thompson were followed by a sac bunt for Sigmon moving both men into scoring position. That was when Matt Torres delivered a sacrifice fly to right plating Posencheg cutting it down to 3-1 heading to the eighth. Hopkins used two walks and a two-bagger from Jacob Harris to pull the run right back leaving it at 4-1. Dickinson put two on in the last of the inning, but could not score. They were then turned away one-two-three in the ninth by Boneno.

Devils Mound Report
After a rocky beginning to his day Peichel settled in quite nicely going seven innings and allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks in addition to fanning six. Glen Cantalupo Jr. went 0.2 of a frame giving up one hit and one run as well as walking three. Matteo George finished off the remaining 1.1 innings surrendering just one free pass.

The On-Deck Circle
Dickinson (18-8, 6-3 Centennial) will attempt to complete the two-game season series sweep of Muhlenberg College tomorrow afternoon at 1pm in Allentown.
