PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team entered the second quarter on Thursday evening locked at 2-2 with Ohio Wesleyan University. However, the Red and White would rip off seven straight goals en route to picking up a 13-6 non-conference win at Publix Sports Park.
Both teams had some chances within the first six minutes of the game, but the goalies had all the answers as
Peyton VanDorpe turned aside Nicole Klabus and Tiffany Trinh, while the Bishops Grace Lilly shutdown both
Faith Parker and
Emma Wynne (2). However, it would be the Red and White that collected the opening goal with Wynne finding
Liz Barroll for the finish. Unfortunately, less than a minute later Ohio Wesleyan responded when Caroline Fleming finished off a rebound off a stop from VanDorpe on Sam Frary. Then with just four minutes remaining, a turnover forced by
Sage Whiteside led to the ball falling in the stick of
Caroline Pirone who worked it into the offensive end where Wynne eventually buried a free-position shot. OWU did find an equalizer just before the end of the period thanks to Klabus to leave it at 2-2.
The second period would be all about Dickinson as they would outshoot the Battling Bishops by a 12-2 margin and score seven times.  Over the first two minutes, both
Ali Broome and Wynne would force a turnover leading to shots from
Delaney Herbert (saved) and
Jenna Nowland (blocked), prior to Wynne cashing in at the 2:55 mark. The Devils followed that goal up with scoring on three of their next four shots thanks to Barroll (Herbert assist), Herbert and Whiteside (
Abby Geary assist) to extend the margin to 5-2 with a little more than seven minutes to play. OWU would then record the next two chances with attempts coming from Fleming and Klabus only to have the door shut by VanDorpe. The rest of the frame belonged to the Devils as
Crawford Fisher, Nowland and Parker all hitting the back of the cage to give DC a commanding 9-2 lead at half.Â
Coming out of the break Abby Markowitz took over between the pipes for OWU and immediately watched her team score on the power play courtesy of Casey Conklin. After VanDorpe stopped Klabus a minute later, Dickinson was back on the board with Herbert finishing off a free-position shot following a foul by Shae Cretu with 10:43 to go. The ensuing two minutes saw each keeper be busy as VanDorpe denied Frary and Trinh, while Markowitz beat away tries for
Bella Guckes and Wynne to hold the margin at 10-3. Dickinson continued to ask questions of the Bishops netminder as
Syd MacKeigan and Barroll (2) were stoned by Markowitz. OWU would ride the momentum of all those saves into a goal from Trinh, before Herbert setup Guckes to take an 11-4 edge to the fourth.Â
Following two early saves from Markowitz on Geary and Herbert, the Bishops would cut one off the deficit when Samantha Diaz buried a free-position goal, prior to Amara Carlson bagging one on the power play to pull within 11-6. The rest of the game saw just three combined shots with the Red and White cashing in on their two cracks at goal thanks to
Lucie Diatta (Herbert assist) and Herbert (Barroll assist) to set the 13-6 final result.
