CARLISLE, Pa. – The Dickinson field hockey team gave a really strong effort on Saturday afternoon against the visiting Swarthmore College. Unfortunately, for the Devils a pair of penalty stroke goals helped the Garnet to secure a 4-2 Centennial Conference win at the Biddle Field Complex.
It would take until the seventh-minute to see the first shot of the match when
Nicole Uebele fed a ball into
Maggie Carson who spun off her defender and fired a shot past Cassandra Conklin for the 1-0 lead. Three minutes later Swarthmore gained the offensive zone and went to work earning two corners resulting in shots from both Jackie Crowley and Sophia Hitchingham, forcing one stop out of DC keeper
Olivia Renault. In the 11
th-minute another corner led to an attempt for Anna Stancofski that was pushed away by Renault. However, as the Garnet continued to apply pressure a foul in the defensive circle led to a penalty stroke for the visitors. Hayley Harris would step up to the spot and just slip a shot inside the post for the 1-1 tie after one.
Swarthmore needed just 1:46 into the second to claim their first lead of the game as Sarah Cooper played a long hit in from the left-side that was tipped by Katherine Kohn into the cage. The away side notched two more shots with Magdelana Jordan and Crowley sending attempts wide of the mark. Dickinson got their first look at Conklin's goal with five minutes off the clock, but
Katie Marthins fired off target after a corner was played in by sister
Abby Marthins. Four minutes after that chance the Garnet made it 3-1 as another stroke was awarded which was put home once again by Harris. The Devils tried to cut into the deficit heading into halftime, unfortunately,
Sammi Moonay and
Becca Woods were unable to call upon Conklin.
Taylor Schlein took over between the pipes at the start of the third period and was immediately put under pressure as she watched Amelia Landry and Jordan have their attempts cancelled out by the defense before they got to her. Three minutes into the frame the Red and White earned a corner leading to a shot from Moonay, but it was blocked by the Garnet backline. The visitors would grab a 4-1 advantage with 5:31 off the clock when Stancofski was stopped once by Schlein, before sending the ensuing rebound through the "five-hole". The DC keeper continued to be put under duress as she recorded two more saves over the next two minutes to hold things where they were.
Katie Marthins had one last look to bring the Devils a little closer heading to the third, but it did not make its way to the goalie.
Dickinson controlled the fourth quarter trying to dig out of a three-goal hole as they outshot the Garnet 8-0 over the final 15 minutes. Inside the first five minutes,
Ella Krenzer and Yandow-Harding (2) put shots towards Conklin tasking her with making two stops. The Devils continued to keep the visitors pinned in their own zone as Uebele and Yandow-Harding had attempts denied, while Moonay appeared to be en route to scoring, but Stancofski was there to clear the ball off the line. However, the home side did eventually breakthrough the Garnet defense again when Yandow-Harding had a shot deflected by
Malena Malka Goldman past Conklin to set the 4-2 final.
