Marthins Pots Two, But Devs Fall Short of #23 Hornets

CARLISLE, Pa. - Senior forward Abby Marthins netted two goals on the afternoon and the Dickinson field hockey team threw everything they could towards the visiting 23rd-ranked University of Lynchburg over the final frame, but ultimately dropped their second one-goal game of the weekend 3-2 to the Hornets on a sweltering Sunday afternoon at the Biddle Field Complex.

The visitors wasted little time putting the home team under pressure as a ball played in from the right wing came to the stick of Aaryn Boatwright who was able to guide the ball past Olivia Renault just 42-seconds in. Two minutes later the Red and White tried to answer back, but Kayla Brady was able to turn away Nicole Uebele. The next four chances belonged to the Hornets as Marlou Wendriks missed wide of cage three separate times, before a penalty corner inserted by Boatwright found Ryleigh Cameron and she ripped a shot from the top of the circle into the goal for a 2-0 advantage. The Devils pushed back hard earning four consecutive corners in a two minute span resulting in shots from Katie Marthins (blocked), Sophia Pereira (wide) and Morgan Yandow-Harding (blocked). However, DC did eventually crack through Hornets goalie Kayla Brady with 10:42 gone as Uebele had a shot nick the post that skipped out to A. Marthins who finished it off trimming the gap to 2-1 after one.

The first six minutes of the ensuing period went by without much sustained offense from either side as each team recorded just one shot during that time with Uebele and Wendriks being blocked by the opposing defense. In the 26th-minute Dickinson earned their first corner of the second and were able to get an attempt from Anna Snyder towards goal, unfortunately it did not get close enough to Brady to bother her. However, Lynchburg made their corner opportunity count as Danielle Coon played it into Cameron who slipped a pass to Wendriks on her left for the strike past Renault making it 3-1. Yandow-Harding recorded two more shots for DC in the frame, but did not force a save.

Dickinson spent the opening four minutes applying all the pressure in the Hornets end looking for the equalizer with A. Marthins being stopped by Brady, while Megan McClure rang the iron. Marthins appeared to have a great chance to get the Red and White tied, but Mallory Lamb came sliding across the goal line to sweep the ball out of trouble for Lynchburg. Brady was called upon one more time during the attack beating aside a blast by Uebele. The visitors would be held without a shot until the 40:26 mark, when Renault stood in the way of an offering off the stick of Allie Freeman. Renault was there once more in the final minute of the period denying Khanyisile Mzizi.

To begin the fourth the Red and White put a new athlete between the pipes as first-year Taylor Schlein replaced Renault. She got to stand there for the opening couple of minutes as Abby Hill and Natalie Slusser missed the mark, but were able to earn an all important corner with a chance to get the vital second goal. That was exactly what the Devils did as A. Marthins rolled the ball to the top of circle where a shot was let go by a DC attacker, the attempt bounced in among a mass of humanity and eventually skipped over the defense where Ella Krenzer knocked it to Marthins for the finish. After the euphoric high of the goal the Hornets took the play to DC over the next five minutes with Schlein having to deny Mzizi twice and Wendriks once to keep the margin at just one 3-2. In the 55th-minute McClure worked her way into the circle down the right side and got a shot away, but it was canceled out by the defense. However, Dickinson got one last push downfield in the final minute as A. Marthins picked up the ball at midfield and carried it towards the attacking end, unfortunately her breakaway was cut short by the clock running out to allow the Hornets to escape Carlisle with the win.
