CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Dickinson volleyball team readied themselves for a return to Centennial Conference play on Saturday by securing a comfortable 3-0 non-conference win over the Wilson College Phoenix inside the Gannett Field House.
The Red and White got off to a hot start as
Cassidy Davis,
Avery Lewis,
Dessie Anne Nietert and
Emma Popham all recorded points to take a 9-2 advantage. Three of the next five went to the home side thanks to an error and a pair of kills for Deah Menedis. However after that Dickinson regained total control with
Alexa Barowski,
Mathilde Verbitsky, Davis and Popham taking six of the following nine points to open up a double-digit cushion at 17-7. Two kills each from Abby Moreland and Niki Schussler pulled Wilson to within 19-12, before
Camille Dofiles, Barowski and Verbitsky helped DC to put away the set 25-13.
The Phoenix attempted to "rise up" to begin the second as Allyson Garcelon, Menedis and Moreland put the hosts ahead 10-6.
Grace Coccagna,
Iona Nelson and
Eliette Whittaker supplied the offense for Dickinson during that stretch. The visitors tried to fight back through kills by
Lillian Bigsby,
Amelia Kim, Coccagna, Nelson and Whittaker chipping the deficit down to 14-12. After Wilson tallied three straight points, the Devils charged back with a 6-2 run thanks to scores for Kim and Whittaker making it 19-18 home side. The duo of Menedis and Moreland brought Wilson to the edge of taking the frame as they went in front 24-21, but the Red and White did not go away as
Jessica Currie, Bigsby, Coccagna and Whittaker tallied five in a row to comeback for the 26-24 win.Â
Dickinson took command early in the third as
Willow Palmer, Davis, Nietert and Verbitsky made it 9-2. A kill and a DC miscue trimmed the lead to 10-4, before Bigsby, Davis, Nietert and Palmer extended the gap to 16-4. Five visiting errors helped the Phoenix to get within 19-9. However, after that the Red and White would not allow Wilson to claim another point with Currie recording two kills during a 6-0 charge to take the match 25-9.
