Darkness Only Thing That Stops Devils-Falcons Slugfest

CARLISLE, Pa. - The Dickinson baseball team got four RBIs on the day from Kenny Tagliareni and another three from Christian Kim to help rally back from 10-7 down in the eighth to draw even at 10-10. After a scoreless ninth that saw each team have a chance to grab the go-ahead run the contest was unfortunately called due to darkness without a winner leaving the two sides sharing a 10-10 tie at MacPhail Field in the Devils home opener.

Inside the Game
DC starter Koll Peichel cruised in the first retiring the first three batters on a pair of flyouts and a strikeout. That led to Dickinson coming to bat in the home--half where Dylan Posencheg and Tagliareni were set down by Brody Martin, before Derek Smith worked a walk. Kim then stepped into the box and smoked a triple over the head of the right-fielder to drive in one. Kaden Sigmon would ground back to the mound to wrap things up. Peichel allowed the leadoff man to reach in the second, prior to erasing him with a pickoff. However, two batters later the Falcons were even as Evan Wagaman tripled and was followed by an RBI groundout for Isaiah Parido to have things tied at 1-1 through two. A single and two groundouts had a man in scoring position with two gone for Messiah. Back-to-back singles from Joshua Ammons and Sam Zercher plated two to push the visitors out to a 3-1 edge with three in the books. The visitors made it 4-1 a frame later as a knock for Parido and a failed pickoff attempt left a runner at third with two down for Dusty Isanogle. He smacked the Peichel offering through the left-side driving home another. Martin provided another shutdown inning by getting Ryan Thompson, Matt Torres and Sigmon in order to shift the games to the fifth.

With the Devils still trailing 4-1 entering the home-half of the fifth a single by Colin Jones, followed by Will Ferris being hit by a Martin pitch put two on with no outs. After Posencheg laid down a sacrifice bunt, Tagliareni ripped a single to center sccoring two and pulling DC to within 4-3. The second hit batter and a flyout had two more in scoring position for Sigmon. He stepped into the box and delivered a two-run single to right to give the Red and White the lead back going to the sixth at 5-4. Nathan Weisoly then took over on the hill and immediately ran into some trouble as he let six straight men reach, including an RBI single from Isanogle, while a DC miscue let the sixth run of the game come in (6-5). Austin Buzza replaced Weisoly at that point with the bags full and unfortunately hit Zercher right out of the gate to force in one (7-5). A strikeout of Wagaman set the stage for a two-run two-bagger for Parido to extend the margin to 9-5 still with one gone and two on. Buzza then settled down to get the next two batters on strikeouts to retire the side. Aaron Renninger became the second Falcons pitcher to kickoff the last of the sixth. After two Ks walks to Jones and Posencheg led to a two-run knock by Tagliareni to pull the Devils within 9-7 going to the seventh. New DC arm Peyton Fox was unable to put together a shutdown inning as he allowed a double to Jarrett Gordon, before a failed pickoff and a wild pitch let him come home for the 10-7 lead. Christian Foltz set the Devs down in order to keep it 10-7 to the eighth.

Pat Metzger went to work in the top-half of the frame and did exactly what was needed posting to two strikeouts and a flyout to left to let the home side hang tough at 10-7. A strikeout of Jones started the frame, but then an error and two hit batters led to a wild pitch from Foltz scoring one. The second K of the inning brought Kim to the dish with two on and two gone. He blooped a two-run single into shallow right knotting the score 10-10. Sigmon then grounded out to first to end the rally. A quiet ninth out of the pen for Joey Sangiuolo gave the Red and White an opportunity to walk things off in the home-half. A single by Torres and an error with Thompson at the dish put Ferris in a spot to deliver with one down. However, he hit a grounder to third that led to the infielder throw home to get pinch-runner Desmond Watkins at home and then Posencheg struckout swinging to end the ninth.

After a brief discussion among the two coaching staffs and the umpires it was deemed too dark to play any more and the game was called at 10-10.

The On-Deck Circle
Dickinson (1-3-1) will face a tough challenge on Saturday when they welcome defending national champion Eastern Connecticut State University to MacPhail Field for a doubleheader beginning at 11am.
