Inside the Game
After two quick outs were posted by home starter Daniel Johnson, Smith smacked his first jack of the day over the right-field wall for the 1-0 edge.
Christian Kim then worked a walk, before
Kaden Sigmon grounded out to second. DC pitcher
Ethan Hamilton gave up an infield knock to start things off in the home-half, but then induced two groundouts and got John Zarnowski to watch strike three to retire the side. Dickinson added onto their advantage in the second as singles by
Dylan Posencheg and
Ryan Thompson coupled with a free pass to
Ethan Sodl filling the bags with two gone for
Kenny Tagliareni. During his at-bat Johnson unleashed two wild pitches to allow two men to score for the 3-0 lead through two. the home-half of the third saw the Royals trim the deficit as two walks and a single loaded the bases for Corey Zientek. Unfortunately, Hamilton plunked him with a pitch to force in one, before a hit by Zarnowski plated another making it 3-2 a third of the way through the game.
A scoreless top of the fourth gave way to the bottom-half where Scranton came up with consecutive two out hits and a hit batter to put three "ducks on the pond" for Zientek. He gave the home side their first lead with a two-run double to right, followed by a two-run single for Zarnowski plating two more making it 6-3 and chasing Hamilton from the game.
Thomas Marshman then took to the hill and got Jack Heineman to flyout to retire the side. Dickinson pulled one back in the fifth as a single for Smith and walk to Sigmon resulted in a two-out RBI knock through the left-side scoring one (6-4). The Devil pitching duo of Marshman, followed by
Grayson Walker limited the hosts to just two baserunners over the next two frames to keep it at a two-run gap heading to the seventh.
Two straight singles and a fielder's choice left two men in scoring position for Thompson who worked a walk to load the bases for Sodl. He would step into the box against reliever Ryan Heiser and produce a sac fly to make it 6-5. Then, in the eighth the Devils got a single and walk with two gone, which led to Sigmon reaching on an error by the shortstop to score one, before a balk plated Kim who walked earlier in the frame giving DC a 7-6 edge. Dickinson tried to wrap things up in the ninth, but a walk, error and a sacrifice fly allowed the home side to force extra innings against
Joey Sangiuolo. After a scoreless tenth, walks to
Will Ferris and Sodl led to Posencheg producing an RBI knock to right. Smith then stepped in two batters later and watch a passed ball score one, before depositing his second homer of the day over the right-field wall to make it 11-7 heading to the home-half. Sangiuolo ended the game with a groundout and a pair of flyouts to secure the win.
