DALLAS, Pa. - The Dickinson women's lacrosse team got a combined 18 points between the trio of
Delaney Herbert,
Emma Wynne, and
Liv Yeagle, while first-year keeper
Peyton VanDorpe knocked aside seven shots as the Red and White coasted to a convincing 20-9 season-opening win over the host Misericordia University on Thursday afternoon at Mangelsdorf Field.
Both keepers were tested early as Lena Conway shutdown Wynne, while VanDorpe making her collegiate debut between the pipes for the Devils denied Michelle Torzilli inside the first two minutes. Dickinson would be the first to breakthrough when Yeagle buried the dish from
Liz Barroll. Then, on the ensuing draw control win by
Faith Parker she carried the rock into the attack area and earn a free-position attempt which she cashed in for the 2-0 edge with 3:23 gone. However, the Cougars had a fast response as over the next two minutes, Molly Celesky and Emily Baro each slipped offerings past VanDorpe to knot the score. Barroll was turned aside on a free-position by Conway at the half way point, which led to a transition tally for Genevieve Montanye. DC racked up the next two markers thanks to Wynne finishing off a pass from
Gabby Guadalupe, before Guadalupe hit Yeagle to reclaim a 4-3 edge with 2:23 left. Less than a minute later things were locked up again thanks to Baro who made it 4-4 through one.
Each side hit the back of the net within the opening two minutes of the second with Parker and Rachel Shook scoring for their respective sides. An unforced Cougar error off the ensuing draw resulted in Yeagle scoring again, before Wynne took advantage of a draw win for
Emma Norton to push the lead to 7-5. A giveaway by the Red and White would allow Baro to find the net trimming it down to 7-6. With five minutes gone Dickinson added another one as
Caroline Pirone caused a turnover and scooped up the groundball leading to Herbert besting Conway. She then added another one 11-ticks later to give DC the 9-6 edge. Torzilli stopped the Devs roll for a moment with a free-position marker, but DC responded with goals by
Regan Kawa and
Jenna Nowland extending the advantage to 11-7 prompting a MU timeout at the 10:47 mark. The duo of Herbert and Wynne helped the Devils close on a 6-1 run to lead 13-7 at the break.
To kickoff the third again the goalies were called upon with VanDorpe knocking aside a shot from Kylee Cush, while Conway stopped rips by both Guadalupe and Wynne. However, the Devils finally cracked the armor of Conway when Guadalupe assisted the fourth of the game for Yeagle, followed two minutes later by Parker completing her hat trick to make it 15-7 with 9:48 remaining in the quarter. A minute later Herbert worked her way free down the right side and beat Conway to open the margin to nine (16-7). The Devils pushed the advantage to double-digits at the 7:50 mark when Herbert dumped a pass over the Cougar defense to Yeagle who potted her fifth making the lead 17-7, followed by Herbert picking up her eighth point of the day by finding Barroll for the strike. DC pushed the run to 10-0 prior to the conclusion of the third with a tally for Kawa (19-7).
The Cougars finally brought an end to the Devils onslaught as Celesky scored the first Misericordia goal of the second half with 11:09 left. Each team found the back of the net just once more as Barroll and Torzilli traded tallies to account for the 20-9 final.
