Devils Postseason Hopes Come Down to Saturday, After Loss to #12 Hopkins

BALTIMORE - The Dickinson volleyball team will face a "win and in" match on Saturday against the visiting Muhlenberg College, after falling to the 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays by a score of 3-0 on Wednesday night at Goldfarb Gymnasium in Centennial Conference action.

The duo of Simrin Carlsen and Grace Reininga got the home side off to a 4-0 start, before Alexa Barowski, Amelia Kim and Emma Popham helped Dickinson to maintain the four-point deficit at 10-6. Pamela Chiakpo, Chidinma Onukwugha, Helena Swaak and Alice Yu joined Carlsen on an 8-2 romp to extend the margin to 18-8. Dickinson continued to fight however as Dessie Anne Nietert, Mathilde Verbitsky, Kim and Popham all put up points for the Red and White to make it 22-16. Scores by Carlsen and Reininga closed out the set 25-16.

Dickinson was hanging tough early in the second set with scores from Barowski, Kim and Popham leaving the guests trailing by just two 8-6. The Blue Jays then took command of the frame as kills put down by Roxy Karrer, Carlsen, Swaak and Yu organized a 12-3 outburst to make it 20-9. A bad service for Swaak and kills for Barowski and Verbitsky accounted for the only other three Devils points of the set as a kill from Onukwugha wrapped up a 25-12 win.

Four Hopkins errors in the opening seven points of the third gave the visitors a 4-3 lead. Unfortunately, combination blocks by Barowski and Verbitsky as well as Camille Dofiles and Barowski accounted for the only DC points during an 11-3 flight by the hosts to push the Jays ahead 14-7. After the teams shared the ensuing six points, a pair of Hopkins miscues and a Verbitsky kill cut the deficit to 17-13. However, Carlsen, Chiakpo and Yu finished out the set and the match with an 8-1 run to take the third 25-14.
