Softball Swept by Shorewomen in Conference Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Dickinson softball team got solid pitching all afternoon from the duo of Riley Kuehn and Lindsay Kucker, but could not overcome the host Washington College as the Shorewomen picked up a pair of wins on Saturday in the Centennial Conference opener for both sides.

Game One - Washington 1, DEVILS 0

Pitching Decision

W - Lexi Barnhart (3-6) | L - Riley Kuehn (5-3)

Inside the Game

After both sides were set down in order in the first Dickinson had the first chance at runs in the second as Paige Hahn singled and Zoe Kleeblatt worked a two-out walk, but Hannah Brenner went down on strikes to end the threat.

Then, in the fourth Hahn came up with her second hit of the day to put one on with one out. However, Brooke Espenshade struck out and Kleeblatt grounded out. Washington finally broke into the hit column during the home-half of the frame with Hannah Solge picking up a base knock. Kuehn would not allow her to come home though as Barnhart flied out to center.

The Shorewomen plated the only run of the game in the sixth as a single, error, and a walk put runners on the corners with one out for Alyssa Vieira. She would reach on the second DC miscue of the frame allowing the runner to come in from third for the 1-0 lead going to the seventh.

Dickinson threatened in the top of the final inning as singles by Espenshade and Brenner along with a free pass to Laia Gwathmey loaded the bags with one out. Unfortunately, Emma Varella who was the pinch-runner at third got thrown out at home on a fielder's choice and Celia Vinacco grounded out to end the game.

Game Two - Washington 3, DEVILS 1

Pitching Decision

W - Gen Kozub (5-3) | L - Lindsay Kucker (2-4)

Inside the Game

Dickinson would find their first run of the day in the second inning as Hahn reached on an infield single, before going to second on a wild pitch and then coming home to score on an error by the first baseman. Kuehn who was back in the circle to start game two posted a shutdown inning by setting Washington down in order.

The Red and White tried to mount a two-out rally in the third with a walk, single, and a wild pitch putting two in scoring position for Kucker, but she watched strike three to retire the side. Dickinson put a runner on third with no one out in the fourth as Hahn doubled to left, before moving to third on a passed ball. However, Kozub settled down and struck out the next three batters. The home side would load the bags with two away in the home-half, but Kucker got Emmalee Cole to ground out.

Washington got all three of their runs in the fifth with two walks leading to a one-out single for Vieira. Then, after another single loaded the bases Lexie Witmer ripped a single to right-center to plate two more for the 3-1 lead.

The Red and White would get a base runner in each of the final two innings, but would not get anyone beyond second as Kozub got Devon Kueny to ground out to end the game.
