Blanker's Late Heroics Give Devils Split With Shorewomen

CARLISLE, Pa. - Junior Eden Blanker used a two-run ninth inning homer to walkoff the visiting Washington College 3-2 in game one of Saturday's Centennial Conference doubleheader at Dickinson Park. She then tied game two with a two-out home run in the last of the seventh. Unfortunately, the visitors put together a six-run rally in the eighth to claim a 10-5 win.

Pitching Decision - W - Erin McMahon (5-4) | L - Emmie Meeks (2-7)

Inside the Game
  • Pitching was the name of the game early as the two sides combined for just three hits over the first five innings with the visitors recording all of them against McMahon.
  • The Red and White finally picked up a couple of base hits off of Meeks during the last of the sixth as Abby Kohan and Elizabeth Raefski gave the Devils a chance with only one out. However, a popout and groundout stalled any rally.
  • After each team was retired one-two-three in the seventh things shifted to the eighth. With a runner automatically placed at second, Shannon Rosche made it 1-0 reaching on an errant throw which allowed Nevaeh Unzueta the runner to race home. McMahon would then setdown the next three to give DC a chance. With Marah Goldman placed on base, Lauren Routzahn produced a sacrifice but to move her up 60-feet. That brought Kohan to the dish and she collected the tying RBI single forcing the game to the ninth.
  • A sacrifice bunt from Lilly Cook and single for Lilly Wenzel gave the guests a 2-1 edge going to the bottom-half. Jessie Sandusky would use a bunt to push the runner one base, before a sac fly for Jane Lloyd tied things at 2-2. That brought Blanker to the box and she lifted the Meeks pitch up and over the left-field wall to win it 3-2.

Pitching Decision - W - Gen Kozub (4-4) | L - Emory Hadden (0-2)

Inside the Game
  • The bottom of the second saw the first runs of the game as a single by Goldman and double for Routzahn had two in scoring position for Kohan. The starting pitcher for the Devils helped herself out with a sacrifice fly to center plating Goldman. Following a walk to Raefski, Laia Gwathmey reached on a fielder's choice to score Routzahn making it 2-0 heading to the third.
  • Kohan returned to the circle for the top of the third and posted a "three up, three down" shutdown frame.
  • However, in the top of the fourth, a single and a DC error put two on with no outs for Wenzel. She drew the visitors level by delivering a two-run single to left. After two straight groundouts it appeared that Kohan would get out with no more damage, but back-to-back singles resulted in two more coming in to take a 4-2 edge. That was the end of the day in the circle for Kohan as Emory Hadden entered the party and got Julia Guzman to go down on strikes for the last out.
  • It would stay 4-2 until the bottom of the sixth, when a leadoff knock for McMahon would come around to score three batters later when Kohan smacked a ball to centerfield. Raefski worked a free pass to put two on base, unfortunately, a groundout from Gwathmey closed out the inning.
  • Hadden allowed a walk in the top of the seventh, but worked around it continuing to give the DC offense a chance to get even. A pair of hard lineouts by Sandusky and Lloyd began home portion of the frame and had the Devils facing their final out. That was when Blanker stepped up and deposited her second home run of the day beyond the fence to knot the score at 4-4 forcing extras yet again.
  • With the free runner at second, a groundout, error and single resulted in two coming in to make it 6-4 WAC. Another single and walk filled the cushions for Gracelyn Goforth who cleared the pillows with a triple to right-center opening the lead to 9-4. Wenzel added a double two batters later to push the margin by another run heading to the home-half.
  • McMahon was automatically put on base to begin things for Dickinson. She then reached third on a single by Goldman, before coming in on a two-out infield hit for Raefski. Kozub then got a groundout from Gwathmey to end the game.
