Devils Tripped Up by No. 13 Bullets at the Battlefield

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Coming off a pair of exciting Centennial Conference contests on Saturday afternoon against the visiting Washington College Shorewomen, the Dickinson softball team set their sights on a difficult task on Tuesday as the traveled to conference-leading and 13th-ranked Gettysburg College. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the Bullets proved to be too much as they collected a pair of run-rule wins at Bobby Jones Field.

Inside the Game
  • After a scoreless top of the first for DC against Forry, the home team went to work in the home-half versus McMahon. Following back-to-back strikeouts to begin the frame, the hosts had the next nine batters reach using six hits and a trio of free passes to rack up seven runs.
  • Dickinson attempted to chip into the margin during the front-half of the ensuing frame when Lauren Routzahn singled to left with one down. Unfortunately, consecutive groundouts closed out any potential for a rally.
  • Gettysburg extended it to 8-0 in the home-half, as Morgan DeFreitas worked a leadoff walk, before two hitters later Anika Pelekis ripped a double to left-center. McMahon then settled down to get a flyout and popout closing out the frame.
  • Elizabeth Raefski tried to kickoff a charge in the third with a leadoff single up the box. However, a popout, strikeout and groundout shut down the Devils.
  • The Bullets used the same formula to stretch the gap to 9-0 when Audrey Bergan drew a free pass, setting the stage for DeFreitas to smack a two-bagger into right-center.
  • The pitching duo of Forry and McMahon were "lights out" from there as they retired the next nine hitters to end game in five at 9-0.
  • Hits - Raefski and Routzahn (1)
  • McMahon (W) - 7.0 ip, 2 hits, 0 runs, 6 walks, 5 strikeouts

Inside the Game
  • Unlike game one it was the Red and White who struck early as a triple from Jessie Sandusky and single for Jane Lloyd had it 1-0 two batters in. Eden Blanker and McMahon each collected a base hit to fill the bags for Marah Goldman. She stepped in and took the Audrey Wright offering into left field for a two-run double and a 3-0 advantage. That brought Forry back into the circle and she turned away the next three batters to end the threat.
  • On the other side Kohan was excellent in the circle through the first two frames allowing just one base runner. Then, during the bottom of the third, a fielder's choice from Audrey Bergan was followed by three straight two-out singles to cut the deficit to 3-2 heading to the fourth.
  • Forry would not be able to put up a clean top of the fourth, as with two away Laia Gwathmey walked and then swiped second with Sandusky at the dish. That allowed Sandusky to provide an RBI base hit to left taking a 4-2 edge going to last of the fourth. The Devils added one more in the top of the fifth when Blanker reached to open up the frame, before Routzahn smoked an RBI two-bagger out to left.
  • However, it would not be enough for the Red and White as the Bullets combined for eleven runs on nine hits as well as being aided by three DC miscues over the fourth and fifth innings to secure the 13-5 run-rule win.
  • Hits - Sandusky (2), Five players tied (1)
  • RBIs - Goldman (2), Lloyd, Routzahn and Sandusky (1)
  • Runs Scored - Blanker (2), Gwathmey, Lloyd and Sandusky (1)

  • Emory Hadden - 1.0 ip, 6 hits, 6 runs (2 earned), 0 walks, 0 strikeouts
  • Dickinson (13-15, 2-6) return to Dickinson Park on Saturday at 1pm for a Senior Day conference doubleheader against Ursinus College.
