Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. – Hannah Spiri converted two penalty strokes on the afternoon, including one at the 44-second mark of overtime to push the Dickinson field hockey team past the visiting Gettysburg College Bullets by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference play.
Dickinson began the game strong recording four shots in a 46-second span. However, the attempts from Sierra Bobb, Bridget Fontaine, Katie Marthins, and Spiri never got to the goalie. Gettysburg got their first shot at the 11:35 mark as Brinsley Rushe sent one wide. Amanda Fruman would be the first to test a keeper with 2:35 left when she got turned away by Eilene Besselman.
Four minutes into the second the Bullets looked to strike as Charlotte Lacey played in a corner to Emma Bertrando who was stopped by Devils netminder Saige Stevens. DC had the next cracks at goal in rapid succession with Spiri getting blocked, prior to Abby Marthins being shutdown by Besselman four seconds later. Besselman would be tasked with making one more save turning aside Becca Woods. Then, with just 54-ticks until half when a bouncing ball was batted out of the air by Isabella Fragomeni to give the visitors a 1-0 edge at the break.
Abby and Katie Marthins both were stopped by Besselman early in the third. The Red Devils kept up the pressure and finally found a breakthrough with 37:19 gone in the game when a foul by Gettysburg in the circle for a stick-on-stick check from behind led to a penalty stroke chance for the Devils. Spiri stepped up to the spot and sent the ball beyond the reach of Besselman to tie the score. Bertrando had an opportunity to break the tie in the final minute, but it was snuffed out by the defense.
Two corners early in the fourth amounted to one shot for DC which came from Morgan Yandow-Harding, but she was turned aside by Besselman. That would be the only chance for the home side in the quarter, while the Bullets had three shots forcing one stop from Stevens to send things to overtime.
The extra session took less than a minute as Gettysburg was whistled for a foul in the circle for using the back of the stick to stop a shot on goal. That led to Spiri netting her second penalty stroke of the contest for the winner.
