Softball Splits Season Opener at Hood

(Chambersburg, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team scored lone runs in four different innings to win the season opener on Sunday, pulling away from Hood College, 4-2. The Mustangs rebounded in game two, taking the nightcap, 11-2.

The Red Devils used singles from Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./William Penn Charter) and Alicia Lane (Sterling, Mass./Nashoba Regional), and a sacrifice fly from Kristen Acocella (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) to put a run on the board in the third inning of game one.

Senior Jessica Epstein (Madison, N.J./Madison) drew a walk and scored the run in the third. She singled and put the Devils in front, 2-0, coming around on a double from Gutpelet in the fifth.

The Mustangs pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, 2-2. Senior Nicole Clayton (Chadds Ford, Pa./Garnet Valley) led off the sixth with a double and quickly put Dickinson back on top, scoring off a single from Kat Parise (Pine Bush, N.Y./Pine Bush).

The Red Devils added an insurance run in the seventh as Gutpelet singled and scored on a single for Acocella's second RBI of the game.

Killian Kueny (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) went 4.2 innings to earn the win with Madison Milaszewski (Rutland, Mass./Sutton) earning the save with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings.

The Eagles turned things around in game two, scoring twice on a two-run homer in the first inning. The Red Devils answered with one in the second behind a double from Acocella before a big half inning put Hood in front, 8-1, at the end of the second.

Gutpelet singled and came in on a single from Lane in the third inning, but the Mustangs added three runs in the fourth for the final of 11-2.

Acocella went 2-for-2 and Lane was 2-for-3 in the nightcap.

The Red Devils start the season 1-1. They travel to Tucson, Arizona for spring break and will face Macalester next Sunday at 3:00 pm.
