Softball Splits CC Opener at Swarthmore

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team split its Centennial Conference opening double-header at Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon. The Red Devils rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth inning to overtake the Garnet, 6-4. The hosts evened the series with a 3-2 decision in the nightcap.

Brigitte Gutpelet (Norristown, Pa./William Penn Charter) reached on an error and came around on singles from Jessica Epstein (Madison, N.J./Madison) and Kat Parise (Pine Push, Pa./Pine Bush) to put the Red Devils on the board in the first inning.

Swarthmore countered with one in the bottom of the first and added three in the third to take a 4-2 lead after Epstein scored on a double steal in the top half of the inning.

The Red Devils strung together three straight singles to start the sixth. Parise tallied two more RBIs while first-years Lindsey Keller (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) and Maggie McConney (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) had RBI singles as well to give Dickinson a 6-4 win.

Madison Milaszewski (Rutland, Mass./Sutton) came on in relief to earn the win, scattering four hits and recording three strikeouts in five innings of work.

Parise went 2-for-3 with three RBIs while Epstein finished 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk. Julie Siecinski (Edison, N.J./JP Stevens) went 2-for-3 with a walk and Keller was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Swarthmore overcame a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the sixth of game two, winning the nightcap, 3-2.

The Red Devils scored twice in the second with a triple from Gutpelet and a double from Siecinski. The Garnet answered with one in the bottom of the second and capitalized on errors and a sacrifice fly to help score the two in the sixth for the win.

Siecinski went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two. Killian Kueny (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) recorded four strikeouts and allowed four hits.

The Red Devils move to 10-8 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. They are scheduled to travel to Franklin & Marshall on Tuesday for a 3:30 double-header.
