Box Score (Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson women's lacrosse team made a great run but came up short, scoring the final five goals in a 16-12 setback in its Centennial Conference opener at Washington College on Saturday.
The Red Devils scored right out of the gate as Maddie Parker (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) finished an assist from Mack Maurer (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield), just over a minute into the game.
Cecily Doktor scored back-to-back to trigger a 7-0 run for the host Shorewomen before Maurer broke up the run at the 13:12 mark.
The teams traded goals with Erika Bloes (Riverside, Conn./Greenwich) scoring, and Anne Dunster (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) adding a goal and assisting Eleanor Kaestner (Glyndon, Md./Franklin) to make the score, 10-5, at halftime.
Washington opened the second half with a 3-0 run before Maurer struck to break up another run. Sam Marmo (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) found Dunster before the Shorewomen stretched the lead to 16-7.
The Red Devils looked to rally, scoring five straight. Ashley Conner (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) scored twice during the run with Parker, Bloes and Kaestner finding the net for the final of 16-12.
Maurer led the attack with two goals and two assists, adding five draw controls and three caused turnovers as five Red Devils tallied two goals on the day.
First-year Avery Priest (San Rafael, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) made three saves in the nets. Sarah Benziger (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) tallied four GBs and forced two turnovers.
The Red Devils slip to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the Centennial Conference. They return home to host Bryn Mawr College on Tuesday night. Opening draw is set for 7:00 pm.
