(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson softball team claimed a big split on Sunday, winning the first game of the double-header as the Red Devils celebrated Senior Day. In their final weekend home-stand, the Red Devils opened with a 4-2 win over Washington College. The Shorewomen found some hot bats and held off a late rally to claim the nightcap, 7-5.
Claire Hofstedt drew a lead-off walk to start the day and came in to score an unearned run to put Washington on the board early. Junior Nicole Torlincasi (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) doubled in the third and scored on an RBI single from senior Grace Edelson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh) to pull the Devils even.
Hofstedt singled in the fifth and scored another unearned run to give the Shorewomen a brief, 2-1 advantage. The Red Devils came right back, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning on the way to a 4-2 victory.
Michelle Orden (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) singled and swiped home on a double steal to tie the game. Edelson walked and stole second before coming in to score on a single from senior Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona).
Ditzler added the insurance run, coming in on a base-hit up the middle from Alicia Lane (Bolton, Mass./Garaway).
First-year Killian Kueny (Ewing, N.J,/Ewing) earned the win with a complete game effort. Sophomore Nicole Clayton (Chadds Ford, Pa./Unionville) went 3-for-3 in the opener while Torlincasi and Orden each added two hits and scored a run.
The Red Devils struck first in game two as senior Nicole Piet (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) singled and immediately came around on a double from Edelson.
Hannah Spohn recorded two RBIs in a three-run fourth inning as Washington pulled in front. Pitcher and designated-hitter Maddie Bennett drove in two runs with a double while the Shorewomen added four more in the top of the sixth.
The Red Devils made up some significant ground in the sixth, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 7-5. Lane drew a walk and moved to third on a double from Jessica Epstein (Madison, N.J./Madison) before Torlincasi tallied an RBI single.
Orden was hit by a pitch and would score on a wild pitch while Piet drove in two runs with double to right center to put Dickinson in striking distance for the seventh. The Shorewomen would hold however, to claim the win, 7-5.
Piet led the way in game two, going 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBIs and a run scored.
Washington moved to 15-15 overall and 7-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils stand at 7-19 and 4-6 in the CC. They are home again on Tuesday, hosting Juniata College in a non-conference match-up at 5:00 pm.
