#18 Devils Top Mustangs With Strong Finish

Box Score

(Owings Mills, Md.) – The #18-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team headed back Maryland to face host Stevenson University on Saturday for the second round of the Green Turtle Classic. The Red Devils looked to rebound from a 9-7 setback to #13-ranked Denison on Friday.

The Mustangs were coming off upsets of #12-ranked Cortland State and #5 Cabrini College as the teams met in the final game of the tournament, under the lights at Mustang Stadium. The Red Devils came out on top in a back-and-forth battle, winning a thriller, 13-10.

Both teams opened with very patient offensive sets. The Red Devils produced some good shots early but it was Stevenson who struck first, scoring at the 9:11 mark of the first quarter.

Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) answered for the Red Devils with a 15-yard strike to tie the game, just a minute later. The Devils countered on a fast break as Dane Huber (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) fed Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) for a quick shot and a 2-1 lead.

Nick Baxter (Newbury, Mass./Governor's) came up with a huge point-blank save, late in the first quarter, but the Mustangs would capitalize just seconds later with an extra-man goal to knot the game 2-2.

Dickinson answered immediately as Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) won his fifth straight face-off and first-year Alex Hosker (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) scored his first collegiate goal as snow began to fall at the end of the first quarter.

Baxter made another outstanding save before the Mustangs tied the game on an incredible shot.

The hosts claimed their first face-off on a violation but turned the ball over to the Devils on a crease violation. Kendall took advantage, scoring his second of the night on a nice roll from behind the cage. He had another great opportunity on the next face-off, but Connor Skeen came up a big save for Stevenson.

Stevenson had a clock draining possession to end the half but the Red Devil defense was able to hold, taking a 4-3 lead into halftime.

First-year Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) scored to start the second half and Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) finished a nice feed from Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) to make it a 6-3 game.

The Mustangs came back to score two straight to cut the deficit to one, with 7:22 remaining in the third. Carney picked up a loose ball in front the cage and found the back of the net to put Dickinson up, 7-5, with just under six minutes left in the quarter.

Stevenson came back, scoring twice again to close out the quarter with the game tied, 7-7. They struck to start the fourth, taking an 8-7 lead.

Kendall tied the game with 11:35 remaining, completing the hat-trick off and assist from Phillips. He put the Devils back on top, with a nice move at the 9:20 mark. Carney netted a hat-trick, putting away a rebound to give Dickinson a 10-8 lead.

Menard made a great read and ripped a long shot into the net to stretch the margin to three. Graham Parsons (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) came up with another ground ball to control the face-off, giving him his fifth of the night.

Stevenson used a quick restart to score at the 3:54 mark and won the ensuing face-off, trailing by two. Wade Korvin made a remarkable interception and scored with 2:57 left to play, cutting the margin to one.

Hosker buried a feed from Menard with under two minutes remaining to give the Devils a two-goal cushion. Carney grabbed a rebound and finished things off with a late goal for the final of 13-10.

Carney tallied four goals and an assist for five points, adding six ground balls. Kendall tallied four goals as well to lead the Red Devils. Parsons finished with five GBs as Campbell won 20-of-26 face-offs on the night.

Baxter finished with eight saves, and all proved to be critical as the Red Devils improve to 5-2 overall. They host McDaniel College in the Centennial Conference opener on Wednesday, March 30th at 4:00 pm.
