(York, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team traveled to York College for a big non-conference test against the Spartans and former Red Devil assistant, Carly Zinn. Zinn is in her third season as the head coach.
The match turned into an epic battle as the teams traded goals to force overtime with the Spartans coming out on top, 3-2, in the extra frame.
The Red Devils came out aggressive, forcing a pair of penalty corners in the opening three minutes. York answered with a corner and put two shots on the cage, but senior goaltender Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) turned away both attempts.
Dickinson struck first as junior Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) dodged her way into the circle and finished with a shot in the left corner to give the Devils a 1-0 lead, 9:27 into the match.
The Spartans forced a pair of penalty corners at the midpoint of the half and Fuss made a save on a shot from Ali Posey.
The Devils held the 1-0 lead into halftime. York would tally the equalizer after the break, pulling even with 26:37 remaining as Posey scored her 12th goal of the season with an assist from Autumn Mallory. The Spartans took the lead, just two minutes later as Posey picked up the assist, feeding Lindsay Nye for the goal.
Perlmutter would counter to knot the game at 2-2, scoring her second goal of the game, finishing an assist from senior Taylor Meehan (Phoenixville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) with 16:25 to play in regulation.
The Red Devils looked to gain some momentum as sophomore Amber Dey (Flemington, N.J./South Hunterdon) tallied a pair of shots and Dickinson kept the pressure on, forcing a pair of corners, and York to call a timeout.
Fuss came up with her seventh save, stopping a shot from Dye, and Dey put another shot on goal but Ty McCloskey was there to make her ninth save of the game to keep the match level and send the game in to overtime.
York capitalized early, as Mallory sent a pass to the far post and Nye put it the net for the game-winner, just 1:38 into overtime.
York improves to 6-3 while the Red Devils suffer their second setback of the season to slip to 6-2 overall. Dickinson returns home and to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, hosting Muhlenberg College at 12:00 pm.
