Box Score
(Gettysburg, Pa.) – Sophomore Emilie Arrix (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) was in the right place at just the right time, scoring the game-winning goal with less than one second on the clock as the Dickinson field hockey team rallied for a 2-1 buzzer-beater at Gettysburg College on Tuesday afternoon.
The first half was scoreless behind solid defense and goaltending from both teams. Emily Van Horn kept the Devils off the board with a defensive save while Haley Mowery stopped a pair of shots before the break. Senior Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) turned away three shots in the Dickinson cage.
Gettysburg capitalized on a penalty corner as Samantha Wright sent the ball to Hannah Fitzgerald for a hard strike to give the Bullets a 1-0 lead.
The Red Devils answered with 16 minutes remaining on a waist high blast from senior Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary), scoring off an assist from junior Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest).
The third time was the charm as the Devils scored on a third consecutive penalty corner. The Devils smelled blood in the water and continued to press, forcing corners and a save from Mowery to keep the score level. Dickinson forced 12 corners in the second half and the Bullets tallied another defensive save as Nina Diamond cleared a ball of the line in the 52nd minute.
Mowery came up with a save on a shot by Amber Dey (Flemington, N.J./South Hunterdon) but Arrix was right there to knock the ball inside the right post with 0.01 on the clock to give the Red Devils a key Centennial Conference win.
Mowery finished with seven saves, stopping five shots in the second half. Fuss tallied five saves on the night as the Devils held a slim 16-13 shot advantage.
Gettysburg slips to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils improve to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the CC. They return home to face Swarthmore College on Saturday at 11:00 am.
