(Collegeville, Pa.) – The #19-ranked Dickinson women's lacrosse team dropped a tough decision at Ursinus College, falling 8-5 on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils opened with a 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the opening 4:21. Senior Carly O'Brien (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton Day) finished an assist from classmate Kelly Haglund (Chevy Chase, Md./Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart) to put Dickinson on the board.
Sydney Stern (Bedford, N.Y./Fox Lane) put the Devils up, 2-0, before Kitty Dawson scored back-to-back goals to pull the Bears even, with 21 minutes remaining in the half.
Sophomore Maddy Siebold (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) put the Devils back on top, just over a minute later, scoring off an assist from Mara Cassidy (Silver Spring, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross). O'Brien handed out an assist to junior Jennifer Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) to give the Devils another two-goal cushion.
Julia Fleming answered for the Bears before first-year Elizabeth Sitko (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) scored her second collegiate goal, off an assist from Stern, to put the Devils in front 5-3, with just over 16 minutes to play in the half.
Emma Ebert pulled Ursinus within one and Brynn Dietzel converted a free position with 7:24 to play, tying the game, 5-5. Dietzel put the Bears in front, early in the second half, netting the second of a natural hat-trick at the 26:18 mark. She completed the trick with 20:45 to play in the game, ending the scoring for next 17 minutes.
The Devils were held to just five shots in the second half while the Bears held a 3-1 advantage on draw controls. Ursinus closed out the game with a man-up goal from Dawson at the 3:09 mark for the final of 8:5.
Dawson and Dietzel each scored three goals for the Bears as they improve to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. Margaret Philbin made eight saves on the day while Lisa Grous controlled five draws.
O'Brien and Stern each tallied a goal and an assist. JoJo Auerbach (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis School) made one save in the first half while sophomore Tara Cuddihy (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) came on to stop four shots in the second.
The Red Devils (4-3, 1-1 CC) return home to face Gettysburg College on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
