Swade Steps In to Keep Devils Unbeaten Early

 

(Myrtle Beach, S.C.) – The Dickinson softball team continued its strong start, improving to 6-0 with two more wins on Wednesday in Myrtle Beach. The Devils posted a pair of shutouts, blanking Delaware Valley, 8-0, and St. Joseph's of Long Island, 9-0, in the nightcap.

 

Senior Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) stepped into the pitcher's circle and posted a complete game shutout, tossing five scoreless innings while recording five strikeouts.

 

Junior Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) drew a lead-off walk and scored off the bat of Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) to put Dickinson on the board in the second.

 

The Red erupted for four runs in the third inning and tacked on three in the fourth behind a two-run single from Ditzler. Becca Garlinger (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) tripled to lead-off the third. Three straight walks led to an RBI for Nicole Piet (Robbinsville,  N.J./Robbinsville).

 

Ditzler drove in a run with a single and Alicia Lane (Bolton, Mass./Garaway) tallied an RBI to put Dickinson up, 5-0. Swade helped her own cause with a lead-off walk in the fifth. She came around to score after a Nicole Torlincasi (King's Park, N.Y./King's Park) sacrifice and a double from Grace Edelson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Villa Walsh).

 

Piet singled and Ditzler knocked in two runs with a single to close out the game with an 8-0 decision. Ditzler went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Piet scored twice and Edelson finished with an RBI and a run scored.

 

The Red Devils jumped out to an early lead on St. Joseph's, scoring three times in the first and tacking on a pair in the second. Ditzler and Edelson drew walks and came around to score on RBIs from Piet and Garlinger. Zwecker added an RBI with a sacrifice bunt for a 3-0 start.

 

Ditzler and Michelle Orden (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) tallied back-to-back doubles and Torlincasi singled in a run to stretch the margin to 5-0. Torlincasi singled in Edelson in the fourth and Piet pushed across two more after Swade drove in a run to keep the Devils unbeaten

 

The Red Devils put their unbeaten streak on the line with a pair of games on Thursday, facing Mt. Aloysius College and MacMurray.
