Shorewomen Escape with Sweep Despite Solid Effort

(Carlisle, Pa.) –The Dickinson softball team played well on Saturday but suffered a pair of losses in a double-header with Washington College. The Shorewomen improved to 18-4 on the season and 7-1 in the Centennial Conference.

Washington escaped with a 2-1 decision in the opener, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the sixth inning as Suzanne Patinella hit into an error. The Shorewomen rallied late to claim the nightcap, 11-7.

Sophomore Stacie Maring (Woodbine, Md./North Carroll) put the Red Devils on the board in bottom of the second inning, hitting a homerun over the left field wall.

Junior Becca Garlinger (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro) added a pair of hits in the opener, recording a single and a double.

Kristin Cooper improved to 8-2 with the win, scattering five hits in six innings. Sydney Schorr came in to earn her third save of the season, recording two strikeouts.

Senior pitcher Chelsea Homa (Newton, N.J./Newton) allowed just five hits as well, recording five strikeouts in a complete game effort. She was honored between games, along with classmate Corrine Aherne (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) as the Red Devils celebrated senior day.

The second game provided significantly more offense as the teams combined for 22 hits in the nightcap. Cooper moved to the designated hitter spot in game two, and drove in a pair of runs for Washington in the top of the first inning.

The Red Devils answered in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. Junior Katie Swade (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) led-off with a single and Casey Ditzler (Cleona, Pa./Annville-Cleona) reached on an error.

That set the stage for a three-run homer over the center field wall by Grace Edelson (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) to put Dickinson on top, 2-1.

Washington answered with unearned runs in the third inning to pull in front, 5-3. The Red Devils struck back with unearned runs of their own to lead 6-5, at the end of the third inning.

Washington came through with a big inning in the fourth, scoring six runs to take control, 11-6. Kylie Nottingham added a two-run single while Patinella doubled in a pair of runs as well.

Maring led-off the sixth inning with a double and came in to score on an RBI single from Edelson. Schorr was able to close things out for the final of 11-7.

Edelson went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored in game two. Junior catcher Jay Abell (Glenn Dale, Md./Elizabeth Seton) went 2-for-3 in game two, driving in a pair of runs. Ditzler came around to score twice for the Devils.

The Red Devils are in action again tomorrow afternoon, hosting Haverford College in a double-header at noon.
