(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's volleyball team suffered a pair of setbacks on the second day of the Dickinson Invitational but continue to play well and improve as they prepare for Centennial Conference play next weekend. Michigan-Dearborn went undefeated in the tournament, defeating Lebanon Valley in the final match, 3-1, to capture the title.
The Devils battled to a five-set loss against Penn State Altoona, erasing a two-set deficit to force the fifth. Altoona edged the Devils, 25-23 and 27-25 to take a 2-0 lead. Dickinson posted a 25-11 win and captured the fourth set, 25-18, to keep the match alive. The final set was much like the others with Altoona holding on at the end, 15-13.
Emily Smith (Victor, N.Y./Victor) continued to lead the Red Devil attack, recording a team-high 16 kills, adding three aces and five digs. Classmate Laura Silverman (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) added 13 kills and three blocks at the net.
Rookie setter Jenn Morrissey (Rockville, Md./Good Counsel) dished out 45 assists to go with five digs an two aces while Avery Zuvic (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) and Joanna DeCastro (Far Hills, N.J./West Morris Mendham) combined for 17 digs.
The Devils suffered a 3-0 setback to York College in their final match. Silverman and Shaffner each added seven kills in the nightcap while Smith and senior Sam Iazzetta (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) each tallied five kills in the nightcap. Smith reached double-figures with 10 digs as well, and Morrissey handed out 20 assists.
The Red Devils (1-8) open conference play next Saturday, traveling to Haverford College. They were also originally scheduled to face Moravian College next Saturday, but that match has been canceled.
