(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team turned in a strong performance, but visiting Gettysburg, coming in off an upset of nationally-ranked Ursinus, capitalized on a pair of early goals to post a 3-1 win on Wednesday.
The Red Devils played even with the Bullets and had some quality chances in both halves. Hayward Sawers redirected a shot by Kelly Speiker to put Gettysburg on the board, 13:25 into the contest. Sawers tallied again, just 2:04 later, to stretch the lead to 2-0.
The Red Devils answered with 10:26 remaining in the half as senior Alex Boorse (Center Vally, Pa./Southern Lehigh) found the back of the cage, sending the game into halftime with the Bullets in front, 2-1.
Gettysburg had another strong chance, early in the second half before the Red Devils put some pressure on, and had some great chances to tie the game. The Bullets regrouped and struck again in the 58th minute. Junior Liz Baron picked up a rebound and hit the back of the cage to close out the scoring.
The Devils continued to battle throughout the remainder of the game, but solid play by the Bullet defense, including a defensive save by Ally Duggan and an 11-save effort from Megan Feeg, kept the final, 3-1.
Senior Marybeth McCarthy (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) turned in an outstanding performance to anchor the Red Devil defense. McCarthy came up huge with a pair of defensive saves on the afternoon. Junior Fallon Winters (Spring Lake, N.J./Northfield-Mount Hermon) and first-year Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) also played well in the defensive third.
Junior goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) made nine saves for the Red Devils. Senior Tanya Bellingham (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) played well in the midfield as the Devils put 13 of their 16 shots on goal.
Dickinson slips to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Swarthmore College on Saturday to face the Garnet at 1:00 pm.
