(Chestertown, Md.) – The Dickinson College softball team opened Saturday's double-header at Washington with a thriller in game one. The Devils battled, but fell in the end behind a walk-off homerun by Kylie Nottingham to give the hosts a 4-3 win. The Shorewomen rallied again in the nightcap to post an 8-7 win in nine innings.
Washington took a 1-0 lead on a homerun by Becca Nicely in the second inning. The Devils took the lead, scoring three runs in the top of the fifth behind a three-run homer by senior Kyrie Budnik (Northampton, Pa./Northampton).
Melissa Osborn (Stevensonville, Md./Kent Island) reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a ground out, Bruke Mikesell (Columbia, Md./Howard) singled and stole second with Osborn moving to third before Budnik went over the wall in right center.
The Shorewomen pulled even in the bottom half of the inning as Nottingham launched her first homerun of the game to cut the lead to 3-2. Sally Snover drew a walk and capitalized on Red Devil errors to come around and tie the game.
Meaghan Kimme came on to pitch for Washington, holding the Devils in the sixth and seventh. The Devils left runners stranded on second and third in the seventh before Nottingham ended the game with a one-out homer in the bottom of the seventh.
Budnik led the Devils offensively with her three-RBI homerun. Mikesell went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Senior Allison Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) suffered the loss, despite nine strikeouts while allowing just six hits.
Washington jumped out to an early lead in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning behind five hits, including a two RBI double from Nottingham.
Emma Murtaugh (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) singled and Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair Academy) tripled to put the Devils on the board in the third inning.
The Red Devils had a big inning of their own in the fifth, scoring four runs to take a 5-4 lead. Sophomore Denise Haines (Green Lane, Pa./St. Pius X) started things off with a single. The Devils loaded the bases which would lead to an RBI for Budnik and a pair for Murtaugh.
Washington answered again, taking a 7-5 lead in the sixth, capitalizing on four hits and a pair of Devil errors.
Sophomore Carly Jordan (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) singled to start the seventh and Murtaugh drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. Sisco and Madison Gerish (Fairfield, N.J./Newark Academy) used a sacrifice bunt and fly to score Jordan. Osborn then doubled in Murtaugh to even the score, 7-7.
The score held until the bottom of the ninth when Washington pushed across a run to complete the sweep with an 8-7 win. Lauren Dockrill doubled and came in on a single by Lindsey Glascock to give Washington the victory.
Murtaugh went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the nightcap. Budnik added a pair of hits, a run and and RBI while Mikesell went 2-for-4 as well.
The Red Devils slip to 9-14 overall and 5-3 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Gettysburg College for a double-header on Tuesday at 3:30 pm.
