(Haverford, Pa.) - The
Dickinson College softball team suffered a heartbreaking, 1-0
setback to Haverford in the opening game of a Thursday afternoon
double-header. The Devils avenged the loss with a 3-1 victory in
the nightcap. |
The 'Fords scored an unearned run in the second inning as Alison
Crawford reached on an error and scored the game's only run when
Gabrielle Sapienza was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Cassandra Searls earned the win, allowing just two hits in six
innings. Maggie Cronin came on for the save in the seventh.
Junior Liz Barry (Millis, Mass./Noble &
Greenough) pitched a strong game, allowing just four
hits while recording six strikeouts and surrendering just one
walk.
Junior Emma Murtaugh (Holmdel, N.J./Holmdel) hit a
two-out double in the sixth inning while
first-year Melissa Osborne (Stevensonville, Md./Kent
Island) added the other hit for Dickinson.
Murtaugh put the Devils in front early in game two, launching a
two-run homer, the 19th of her career in the top of first inning.
Senior Erin King (Bowie,
Md./Bowie) singled and came around on Murtaugh's shot
to put the Devils up 2-0.
Crawford answered with a double to score Searls in the bottom
half of the inning for the 'Fords lone run of the game.
The Devils used four hits in the fourth inning to add an
insurance run as Kyrie Budnik (Northampton,
Pa./Northampton Area)drove in Osborn, who singled as
well.
Junior Jess Haklar (Coopersburg, Pa./Southern
Lehigh) put Osborn in scoring position with a double
while Mary Kate Flannery (Westfield,
N.J./Westfield) added a single in the inning as
well.
Senior Allison Jordan (Medford,
N.J./Shawnee) recorded nine strikeouts in a six-hit
victory as she improved to 4-2 on the season.
King added another single to finish the game 2-for-4. Murtaugh
had a game-high two RBIs and also drew a walk in the seventh
inning.
Crawford went 2-for-3 in the nightcap to lead Haverford (8-8,
2-2).
The Red Devils stand at 9-12 overall and 2-2 in the Centennial
Conference. They travel to Gettysburg College on Tuesday for a 3:30
start.
