Devils and Fords Share Spoils in CC Opening DH

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team fell behind early on in game on a Saturday's Centennial Conference opening doubleheader at Haverford College and despite a late rally suffered a 5-4 setback in game one. However, game two saw the Red and White take advantage of four Ford errors en route to a 6-3 win at Class of '95 Field.

Final Score - Fords 5, DEVILS 4
Records - DEVILS 11-10, 0-1 CC | Haverford - 9-8, 1-0 CC
Pitching Decision - W - Clarissa Smith (1-3) | L - Erin McMahon (4-3)

Inside the Game
  • The Devils were not able to get anything going in the top of the first as Lauren Lamme set them down one-two-three. Unfortunately, for the Red and White the Fords wasted no time denting the scoreboard against McMahon as they first three batters reached, before Jocelyn Leal posted a grand slam. Following a double for the next hitter, McMahon calmed down and got two strikeouts and a caught stealing to end the frame.
  • Both Lamme and McMahon were outstanding over the next two innings not allowing a threat from either side as the game entered the fourth still at 4-0.
  • Then in the fourth, after Lamme again set down the Red and White in order the home side came to bat looking to extend their lead. McMahon started it out well with a flyout and strikeout, but then two walks and a single to right filled the bags for Addie Sapirstein. The DC pitcher dug deep and made sure their was not another run scored as she got Sapirstein to flyout to center.
  • Dickinson finally cracked the board during the fifth when a one-out knock from Abby Kohan led to Elizabeth Raefski driving her home two batters later with a single up the box. They would then continue to chip away at the deficit an inning after that as a single for Jane Lloyd and two-bagger by Eden Blanker had two in scoring position for Marah Golfdman. She would reach on a fielder's choice, but Lloyd would be thrown out at home. That set the stage for an RBI single by Lauren Routzahn to make it 4-2, before Kohan rocketed a double to right plating two more and tying the game after five-and-a-half.
  • Haverford regained the lead in the home-half using a hit batter, single and wild pitch to have runners at second and third with one down. Sapirstein provided the go-ahead RBI with a groundout to first.
  • Two walks gave the Red and White an opportunity to knot the game in the seventh with two away, but Smith was able to record a game-ending strikeout.
  • Hits - Kohan (2)
  • RBIs - Kohan (2), Raefski and Routzahn (1)
  • Runs Scored - Emma Varella, Blanker, Goldman and Kohan (1)

Inside the Game
  • After a scoreless first, Dickinson got on the board during the top of the second. With one down, Goldman doubled to left and was able to advance to third thanks to an error. She then crossed when Routzahn reached on the second HC error of the frame. Kohan then helped herself by making it 2-0 with a single to right-center. She then provided a clean inning in the circle by recording a pair of groundouts and a popout sending the game to the third.
  • Jessie Sandusky began the inning with a bunt single against McQueen. A groundout and strikeout appeared to maybe stall the rally, but McMahon lashed a double to right-center for a 3-0 advantage through three.
  • Kohan would continue to keep the Fords off balance at the plate and was able to maintain the 3-0 cushion into the fifth. That was when Kaleigh Bodak took over in the circle for HC and immediately ran into some trouble as singles by Lloyd and Blanker along with a double steal placed two in scoring position for McMahon. She did not have to even pick up a base hit to get a teammate across as a passed ball led to one scoring. After she walked another Fords error plated the fifth of the game for DC, before a sacrifice fly by Routzahn opened the gap to 6-0 heading to the home-half.
  • Haverford used four singles during the last of the sixth to score three times and halve the deficit to 6-3 through six. Kohan gave up a two-out single in the seventh to Leal, but got Kyra Van Denburgh to groundout to Routzahn at second for the final out and securing the split.
