Devils Rout Eagles in Game One, but Get Tripped Up in Game Two

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Dickinson softball team got three hits each from Eden Blanker and Erin McMahon as well as got stellar pitching from McMahon in the circle to pick up a dominant 11-2 win in game one over the host Juniata College on Thursday. However, the Eagles answered in game two with a 4-2 win to salvage a non-conference split at West End Field.

Final Score - DEVILS 11, Eagles 2
Records - DEVILS 11-8 | Juniata - 5-16
Pitching Decision - W - Erin McMahon (4-2) | L - Rylea Lynch (0-2)

Inside the Game
  • Dickinson opened the game up with a bang as with one away a walk to Jane Lloyd and singles by Blanker and McMahon made it 1-0. Following a knock from Marah Goldman the bases were full for Lauren Routzahn. She would not face Lynch though as Gracie Ruch entered the circle. She would be greeted quite rudely as Routzahn pounded a grand slam over the fence to make it 5-0 through just a half.
  • McMahon allowed a leadoff single, but then shut the door on the Eagles. She then posted a "one-two-three" second to keep the margin at five entering the third.
  • After a quiet top of the third, Juniata mounted a two-out rally during the home-half cutting the margin down to 5-2 thanks to two walks and a pair of singles.
  • The Red and White responded right back in the top of the fourth as Grace Melchionno ledoff with a walk, followed three batters later by crossing home on a knock by Lloyd. Blanker was next up and she singled out to center leaving two on with two down. That brought McMahon to the dish and she helped herself in a Big Way by blasting the Devils second home run of the game pushing it to 9-2.
  • McMahon went through the next two innings in the circle allowing just one base runner, while striking out three.
  • Dickinson would put the game away during the top of the six when with two gone, Lloyd singled to set the stage for an RBI three-bagger to right from Blanker to make it 10-2. McMahon continued her outstanding game by knocking an offering in to right plating Blanker for an 11-2 advantage.
  • With the Eagles facing their final hope as the run-rule starred them in the face, McMahon did not allow them to mount any kind of a rally as she recorded a strikeout and two flyouts to end the game.
  • Hits - Blanker and McMahon (3), Lloyd (2), Goldman and Routzahn (1)
  • RBIs - McMahon (5), Routzahn (4), Blanker and Lloyd (1)
  • Runs Scored - Blanker and Lloyd (3), McMahon (2)
  • Triples - Blanker (1)
  • Home Runs - McMahon and Routzahn (1)

Records - DEVILS 11-9 | Juniata - 6-16
Pitching Decision - W - Isabella Countryman (1-2) | L - Abby Kohan (5-5)

Inside the Game
  • A leadoff single for Jessie Sandusky in the first tried to give the Devils a chance to strike early, but two groundouts and a popout ended the frame.
  • The home-half of the first saw the Eagles take a 1-0 lead when with one gone Jessie Hunt touched up Kohan for a solo home run.
  • Dickinson's offense could not get anything going against Countryman as she sat down six consecutive batters.
  • The Eagles used the last of the third to extend their advantage to 4-0 using a single and a double to make it 2-0, before Alison Superka posted the hosts second homer of the game. Emory Hadden was then summoned to the circle to try and close out the frame which she did quite nicely by inducing a pair of groundouts.
  • Juniata's pitching continued to stymie the Devils attack as Countryman retired nine straight DC hitters over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
  • The Red and White's offense finally cracked the board during the top of the seventh. A walk to Lloyd and double by Blanker put two in scoring position with no outs for McMahon. She collected her sixth RBI of the day with a grounder to first, before an infield single for Goldman plated another to cut it down to 4-2. Unfortunately, a popout and groundout closed out the rally and the game.
