Devils End Skid Against Owls, but Fall to Monarchs

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Dickinson softball team continued their very busy Spring Break schedule on Thursday afternoon with games against the Mississippi University for Women and King's College (Pa.) at the North Myrtle Beach Park Complex. In the day's opener the Red and White snapped a three-game skid with a 4-2 win over the Owls, before falling to the Monarchs in a hard-fought 2-0 contest.

Final Score - DEVILS 4, Owls 2
Records - DEVILS 6-3 | MUW - 9-6
Pitching Decision - W - Abby Kohan (3-1) | L - Rylie Grisham  (2-3)

Inside the Game
  • After a "three-up, three-down" top of the first, Dickinson would jump out to an early 1-0 lead as with one away Jane Lloyd cracked a double down the left-field line, before two batters later Eden Blanker plated her with an infield single. Kohan then reached on an error to try and keep the inning rolling, but Lauren Routzahn bounced out to first for the final out.
  • Following a quiet second for both sides, MUW used a walk and single to put two on with one gone for Emilee Slade. She gave the Owls a 2-1 advantage with a two-run double to left. Kohan allowed nothing else though as a strikeout and flyout retired the side.
  • Grisham took over in the circle for Brooklyn Wood to open up the last of the third and immediately ran into a predicament as singles for Jessie Sandusky and Lloyd along with a free pass issued to Erin McMahon filled the pillows with one out. Kohan drove home one with a fielder's choice, but DC could do nothing else in the frame.
  • The game stayed locked up at 2-2 into the last of the sixth when a double for Blanker (Emma Varella pinch runner) came in to score on a base hot from Kohan. Routzahn singled into center putting runners on the corners. That brought Baylee McWilliams on to pitch and got two quick outs, before Laia Gwathmey sent a pitch into right scoring Kohan for a 4-2 edge entering the seventh.
  • Kohan made quick work of the Owls with their last call recording two groundouts and a popout to end the game.
  • Hits - Blanker and Lloyd (2)
  • RBIs - Kohan (2), Blanker and Gwathmey (1)
  • Runs Scored - Kohan, Lloyd, Sandusky and Varella (1)

Records - DEVILS 6-4 | King's (Pa.) - 3-3
Pitching Decision - W - Courtney Grogan (1-1) | L - Emory Hadden (0-1)

Inside the Game
  • Both teams had chances in the first as each side recorded two singles, but both Grogan and Hadden in the circle were able to pitch out of trouble.
  • After a scoreless second, King's came up to hit in the top of the third and using four singles they took a 2-0 lead against Hadden with the RBIs coming from Paige Bergan and Alyssa Fox.
  • Lloyd tried to start a two-out rally during the home-half with a walk, unfortunately, Erin McMahon popped up to retire the side.
  • Over the next three frames Dickinson was unable to muster much in the way of offense as Blanker collected a double in the fourth, while Lily Hartly notched a single an inning later.
  • With the game still at 2-0 entering the seventh, McMahon who had taken over for Hadden in the circle a few innings prior continued to keep DC within striking distance by recording a "three-up, three-down" top-half.
  • Then during the Devils last chance, Kaylie Renner was hit by a pitch to start the frame and Elizabeth Faefski singled three batters later to put runners on the corners with two away. However, the Red and White would not complete the rally as Grogan induced a flyout to end the game.
