Devils Split Battles With Wildcats and Mighty Macs in SC Finale

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Dickinson softball team closed out their time at the North Myrtle Beach Park Complex on Friday afternoon with battles against Penn College of Technology and Immaculata University. The Red and White returned to their winning ways in the opener with a 2-0 win over the Wildcats, before ending their Palmetto State stay with a setback against the Mighty Macs by a score of 10-6.

Final Score - DEVILS 2, Wildcats 0
Records - DEVILS 7-4 | PCT - 6-7
Pitching Decision - W - Kaylie Renner (2-1) | L - Fayth Anderson (0-2)

Inside the Game
  • Dickinson was unable to get a player on base through the first two innings, while the Wildcats put two on in each frame but could not score against Renner.
  • Then in the top of the third, Dickinson had a chance to breakthrough as walks to Lily Hartley and Marah Goldman along with a single by Jessie Sandusky filled the cushions with two away. Unfortunately, Eden Blanker hit into a fielder's choice that saw Goldman be forced out to retire the side.
  • After nothing happened in the fourth, the Devils came up to hit in the top of the fifth against Anderson still searching for the game's first run. With two down and Sandusky on base following a walk, Goldman provided a single to left scoring Sandusky for the 1-0 lead. She would then steal second, but Blanker flew out to deep center ending the frame.
  • Erin McMahon who took over in the circle for Renner allowed one runner in the fifth and six, fortunately for the Devils she did not let anyone advance all the way home.
  • The top of the seventh saw the Red and White go up 2-0 as Sandusky reached on an error by the third baseman, before Jane Lloyd got on base thanks to the second straight miscue from the Wildcats which gave Sandusky the opportunity to race home.
  • McMahon went back to the pitching plate trying to close out the game and that was exactly what she did with a popout, groundout and strikeout in order.

Inside the Game
  • Dickinson took the lead just three batters into the game as base hits from Lloyd and Goldman coupled with a double steal set the stage for a sac fly by Blanker.
  • Unfortunately for the Devils the lead was short lived as two of seven DC errors in the game allowed IU to draw even through one.
  • McMahon reached on an error to kickoff the top of the second and thanks to a sac bunt and passed ball she was able to score on a fly ball off the bat of Laia Gwathmey.
  • The Mighty Macs responded once again using a walk, an error and an atypical steal of home led to two crossing the dish to reclaim the lead at 3-2 heading to the third.
  • Immaculata would just add onto their advantage over the next two frames using five hits and three DC errors to extend their advantage to 8-2 at the end of four.
  • Then, in the top of the fifth, the Red and White pulled one back as Sandusky reached on an error by the shortstop, before coming around three batters when Blanker smacked a pitch into center trimming the gap by one (8-3).
  • A double and single along with a stolen base left two in scoring position with no one out for Steph Kelly. She would groundout to second plating the runner from third. The next batter was Jess Oldham and she made it 10-3 by reaching on a DC miscue allowing the run to score.
  • Dickinson faced last call in the top of the seventh needing seven runs just to draw level. Things began well as Sandusky singled to right, before two batters later coming home on a double for Goldman. That was immediately followed by Blanker smoking a pitch deep into right field driving home Goldman. Renner would cut it down to the final margin of 10-6 with a sacrifice fly to left.
