SPARKS, Md. - Junior attackman
Owen Porter netted his fifth goal of the afternoon with 1:44 remaining in the first overtime period to help the seventh-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team overcome a 4-1 first quarter deficit to post a thrilling 13-12 non-conference win over St. Mary's College of Maryland at William G. Tierney Field (USA Lacrosse Complex).
The Red and White took advantage of an early giveaway by Aiden Doyle as
Xander Usich popped the rock free, which allowed
Sam Campbell to bury the first goal of the day past Ty Grove. Then, over the next three minutes the Seahawks played "make it, take it" lacrosse as Matteo Ciccarello won three consecutive faceoffs resulting three goals, before a stop by Grove on
Matt Thurston led to the fourth straight for St. Mary's taking a 4-1 edge with ten minutes to play prompting a Dickinson timeout. Following a save for
Patrick Scarborough against Jake Levey, the Devils stopped the SMC run when
Sascha Gannon ripped the back of the net. Chances for both Joshua Martel and Johnny McGrain were denied by Scarborough allowing Porter to cash in his first of the day off a dish from Thurston to pull within 4-3. Over the last four minutes the Seahawks held a 4-2 shot advantage with Quinnten Hatfield stuffing the rock into the net to make it 5-3 entering the second.
Dickinson had the first two cracks at goal to begin the period, but Porter was told "no" by Grove while Thurston fired one wide. At the other end of the field Scarborough had the answer for both Nate Hochrein and Declan Horton to preserve the two-goal lead. However, the Red and White would respond quite nicely over the next minute as
Liam Carney setup Thurston (5-4) and Porter finished off a nice solo effort to draw level at 5-5 with 11:37 to play. The Seahawks needed just 62-seconds to re-establish a two-goal (7-5) gap thanks to tallies for Martel and McGrain. St. Mary's continued to apply the pressure recording the ensuing five shots forcing just one stop out of Scarborough. After
Mac Childs and Porter went wide with their opportunities a giveaway by SMC led to an unassisted marker for
Ben Tomick to cut it down to 7-6. A turnover caused by
Evan Karetsos led to Tomick notching his second point of the game by setting up Porter, before
Charlie Baughan stuck the ball in the stick of
Skyler Schluter to push DC ahead 8-7 with 12:18 gone. Martel made sure the game would head to the halftime break tied when he collected his fourth of the half making it 8-8.
The Devils had the opening four shots of the third with Gannon (2) and Porter going off target, but Schluter did find the back of the net just under two minutes in. However, a DC miscue resulted in Hochrein setting up Horton to tie things back up. The seesaw game continued with Grove denying Carney, but fortunately Porter claimed the rebound and stashed the rock behind the keeper to reclaim the lead at 10-9. After back-to-back stops by Scarborough on Keegan Preis, Campbell handed the Red and White a two-goal edge (11-9). Once again though the Seahawks continued to battle as Martel tallied. Off the ensuing faceoff win for
John McKee, the ball eventually made its way to Campbell who finished off the hat trick making it 12-10 inside the final five minutes. Unfortunately, for Dickinson, SMC collected markers from Horton and Martel to tie the game once again at 12-12 heading to the fourth.
Dickinson struggled to find an offensive rhythm to begin the fourth as a quartet of giveaways led to seven Seahawk shots over the first six minutes, but only tasked Scarborough with making one stop. Following another pair of saves for the DC keeper on Doyle and Preis, Childs and Porter asked questions of Grove but he was up to the task. Both goalies were called into action late in the period to hold onto the tie as Scarborough beat aside chances from Horton and Levey, while Grove shutdown both Carney and Porter to send things to bonus lacrosse.
Despite SMC winning the opening faceoff they would never record a shot as Karetsos poked the ball away from Preis allowing the Devils to go back the other way where Porter went "five-hole" with his shot to give DC the 13-12 win.
