CARLISLE, Pa. - To say it was the "
Patrick Scarborough Show" on Saturday at Biddle Field is a bit of an understatement as the senior goalie for the seventh-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse recorded 14 saves and scored two goals in the Devils 11-6 Centennial Conference opening win against Muhlenberg College.
An early Muhlenberg turnover led to the first chance for Scarborough as the Mules went into a "10-man ride" which pulled MC keeper Stephen Krug out of the cage allowing him to launch the ball into the empty net for the 1-0 lead. Both goalies were then incredibly sharp over the next five-plus minutes Scarborough making two stops, while Krug shutdown
Owen Porter,
Luke Whalen and
Colin Williams keeping it at 1-0 with seven minutes off the clock. Then, a giveaway by Thomas Oilfiers forced by
Ethan Ackerman resulted in Porter setting up
Matt Thurston for the finish. Wyatt Malia solved Scarborough at the 9:43 mark to make it 2-1, but
Sam Campbell and Porter each stuck the rock past Krug over the final three minutes putting the Devils ahead 4-1 entering the second.
Muhlenberg recorded four of the opening six shots of the ensuing period with none of them scaring Scarborough, while at the other end of the field
Sascha Gannon and Whalen each asked questions of Krug. The Mules cut the deficit down to 4-2 through Daniel Friedel with 11:32 left. At the midway point of the frame Dickinson went on a quick two-goal spurt as Scarborough once again hit from the other side of the midfield stripe and
Skyler Schluter found Gannon 42-seconds later to push the gap out to four (6-2). After Krug denied Porter a few minutes later, Muhlenberg started firing from all angles during the final six minutes tallying eight shots, scoring one time thanks to Tyler Kitchen pulling within 6-3 going to halftime.
Dickinson wasted very little time in getting the first marker of the second-half as Schluter netted an unassisted goal just 52-ticks in. Off the ensuing Mules faceoff win, Chase Kusko was turned aside by Scarborough leading to Schluter setting up Williams for 8-3 advantage. After
John McKee won the next faceoff both
Capp Reynolds and Porter missed the mark which allowed Friedel to go back down the field and fire a shot into the cage (8-4). Scarborough continued to be incredibly sharp between the pipes for the Red and White making five more stops to hold the lead right where it was. Thurston attempted to extend the DC advantage, but was stymied twice by the post. However, the Devils would not be denied as Thurston hit Porter for the shot and goal making it 9-4 through 45 minutes.
Muhlenberg came out with their "hair on fire" to kickoff the fourth tallying seven shots over the first five-plus minutes resulting in two goals as well as a pair of Scarborough stops leaving the gap at 9-6. Dickinson then responded with five consecutive shots and two goals coming from
Cullen Mulhern and Gannon stretching the lead back out to five 11-6 with less than five minutes remaining. There would be just two more shots in the game both coming from Mule attackers, but neither of them hit the bullseye allowing things to end at 11-6.
