Devils Fall to Both Hawks and Comets on Thursday

TUSCON, Ariz. - The Dickinson softball continued to try and figure things out on Thursday afternoon in Arizona going in search of their first win against both the University of Hartford and the University of Texas at Dallas. Unfortunately, for the Red and White they came up on the wrong side of ledger by scores of 13-8 and 8-0.

Game One: Hawks 13, DEVILS 8
Time of Game: 2:00
Pitching Decision: W - Carly Mayhood (2-1) | L - Beth Belanger (0-3)

Inside the Game
Dickinson went behind early as a walk and error helped to lead to two runs coming in on a sacrifice fly for Mara Sczecienski and double by Adelie Beebe making it 2-0 through a half. Following a "three-up, three-down" home-half of the first, the Hawks would add four more during the second with the RBIs coming off hits from Olivia Wok and Sczecienski to push the lead out to 6-0 through two. The game then stayed that way until the top of the fourth when a double and single resulted in another coming home for the 7-0 edge. Dickinson finally cracked the hit column in the bottom-half when Jessie Sandusky began things with a single, but then Jane Lloyd, Eden Blanker and Emma Glosson were set down in order to send things to the fifth.

After Belanger hurled a "one-two-three" top of the fifth, the Red and White got their offense going against reliever Gracie Hopkins. With two away a single for Emily Whelan, a Hartford error (Lauren Routzahn at-bat) and Emma Varella walk filled the cushions with Devils for Sandusky. She stepped into the box and smoked a bases-clearing triple to cut it down to 7-3, before Lloyd provided an RBI single. She then stole second, allowing a two-bagger for Blanker to add another to the total at 7-5 as the game entered the sixth. With a runner on second, Kaylie Renner entered the circle for DC and allowed a walk, prior to a two-run knock by Sczecienski. That was followed by a groundout to score one more, before two batters later Alex Hassett plated another stretching it to 11-5. Abby Kohan began the Dickinson attack in the sixth by reaching on an error and then was followed by Whelan drawing a one-out walk. After Routzahn went down on strikes against Hopkins, Varella pounded a two-run triple and Lloyd added an RBI later in the frame to cut it down to 11-8. Unfortunately, in the seventh the Hawks grabbed two more, while the Red and White were held off the board for the 13-8 final.

Devils Circle Report
Belanger went the first five innings giving up nine runs (three earned) over six hits, but walked five and struck out two. Renner lasted the remaining two frames issuing five hits and surrendering four runs (three earned).with one K.

Game Two: Comets 8, DEVILS 0 (F/5)
Time of Game: 1:25
Pitching Decision: W - Marisa Mejia (2-2) | L - Erin McMahon (0-1)

Inside the Game
Texas-Dallas began the game with two in the first as two walks and an error allowed one to score from third when a runner was caught stealing second base, while the other came on an infield double by MiKayla Hoffman. Dickinson recorded their only hit of the game during the top of the second, when Glosson poked a single out to right, but went no further around the bases. The Comets then used three runs each in the fourth and fifth to close out the game.
