TUSCON, Ariz. – The Dickinson softball team had a successful final day of their Spring Break trip in the desert by knocking off Sewanee University by a score of 9-6, before the 23rd-ranked Central College used a five-run first to pickup a 7-1 victory at the Lincoln Park complex.
Game One: DEVILS 9, Tigers 6
Time of Game: 2:03
Pitching Decision: W -
Erin McMahon (1-1) | L – Reagen Huskey (3-8)
Inside the Game
Things started out rocky for Dickinson starter
Abby Kohan as a single and double led to the first run of the game just three hitters in. Then, two batters later Hannah Wilson singled to left making it 2-0 after just a half an inning. However, three straight walks drawn by
Jessie Sandusky,
Jane Lloyd and
Eden Blanker set the stage for a two-run single back through the box by
Zoe Kleeblatt to knot the game. Following a free pass to Kohan that loaded the bases again, a wild pitch let the third run in, before
Lauren Routzahn produced an RBI single to center plating Kohan giving DC a 4-2 after one. A double and hit batter put two on for the Tigers in the top of the second, but a strikeout and two groundouts retired the side. Dickinson would fill the pillows again during the home-half, but a popup for
Laila Gwathmey ended the threat.
Both teams would get back on the scoreboard in the third as a bunt single and double placed two runners on with two gone, before consecutive triples by Christian Cain and Grace Black gave Sewanee a 5-4 edge heading to the home-half. However, with one down Dickinson would have two runners on thanks to back-to-back singles for
Marah Goldman and Sandusky. The allowed Lloyd to plate one with a double to right, followed by a sac fly for Blanker pushing the Devils back in front (6-5). McMahon entered the circle to start the fourth and posted a clean frame, prior to giving one up during the sixth on a double and triple. She would get Abbie Buckner to watch strike three to allow no more damage. Dickinson's offense reclaimed the lead in the last of the sixth against Huskey as
Emily Whelan singled, followed by a pair of errors letting both Gwathmey and Routzahn reach as Whelan came home. After a free pass to Sandusky loaded the bags, back-to-back walks issued to Lloyd and Blanker let the Red and White make it 9-6 going to the seventh. McMahon nailed the game down with a one-two-three top-half to end the game.
The Devils Circle Report
Kohan tossed the first three innings giving up five runs over nine hits, while striking out a pair. McMahon claimed the victory in relief lasting four frames allowing just one run on five hits, in addition to whiffing three.
Game Two: #23 Dutch 7, DEVILS 1
Time of Game: 1:27
Pitching Decision: W – Chloe Dougherty (1-0) | L –
Kaylie Renner (0-2)
Inside the Game
Dickinson would get a two-out knock for Blanker in the first, but she was retired on a fielder's choice by
Emma Glosson to end the frame. The bottom-half saw Renner find immediate trouble as the first three runners reached safely leading to a 2-0 lead. After a lineout from Megan Stuhr, a pair of singles stretched the gap out to 4-0, before a DC throwing error allowed the fifth of the inning. Following a quiet second on both sides of the diamond, Dickinson would threaten during the top of the third with a walk to Routzahn and fielder's choice for Lloyd giving Sandusky a chance to chip away, but she would ground out to second for the last out. Renner continued to give Dickinson hope by setting aside the Dutch in order over the third and fourth sending the game to the fifth still at 5-0. With two away during the top of the frame, Gwathmey reached on an error and stole second, prior to coming across on a miscue by the Central centerfield with Lloyd at-bat. However, the Devils got no closer as Sandusky popped up for the last out. The Dutch added two more in the last of the sixth thanks to an RBI groundout for Mariah Parton and Carley Underwood plating one with a bunt stretching it out to 7-1. With Dickinson facing "last call" McMahon, Routzahn and Gwathmey were retired in order to close out the game.
The Devils Circle Report
Renner went the distance giving up eight hits resulting in seven runs (four earned), while striking out one.
