Massive First Quarter Propels Devils Past Bears in Puerto Rico

CAGUAS, P.R. - The Dickinson women's basketball team found their offensive footing right away on Saturday morning as they jumped out to a 23-5 lead through the first period en route to a 71-52 victory over Bridgewater State University at the Coliseo Roger Mendoza.

  • The Bears took their one and only lead of the game 1:11 in when Jessica D'Amours followed up a miss by Kylie Grassi.
  • Five straight for Clair Marion and a triple from Clare Cronley gave DC an 8-2 edge with just over three minutes gone.
  • A free throw by Grassi cut it to 8-3, but Caitlin Blackman, Mia Chapman, Leah Dubin, Molly Heron and Abby John all tallied during a 15-2 run to give the Devils a 23-5 lead after 10 minutes.
  • During the frame the Red and White limited BSU to just 1-of-17 shooting from the field.

  • A Chapman layup with with 28 seconds gone was the only DC bucket during a 7-2 push for BSU to make it 25-12.
  • Over the next three minutes five points for Blackman and a foul shot by Chapman allowed the Devils to maintain a sizable cushion at 31-17 with 3:16 left.
  • Five of the final six went the way of the Bears as a Victoria Zerbe free throw left the score at 32-22 as the sides went back to the locker room.
Template - 3rd Quarter
  • Dickinson came out of the break strong as four points from Jenna Weinstein, coupled with two for Chapman, Marion and Zerbe gave DC a 42-24 advantage with 2:32 off the clock.
  • Over the ensuing three minutes the two teams combined to miss a dozen shots from the floor with the only score being a solo free throw by Lexi Thompson (42--25).
  • A Zerbe layup made it 44-25, but BSU answered with seven straight to get within 44-32.
  • However, Chapman would embark on a personal 5-0 charge over the last 70-seconds to give DC a 49-32 lead heading to the fourth.
Template - 4th Quarter
  • After the Bears netted the opening four points, a Marion three-ball set the stage for an 11-0 Devils outburst with contributions coming from Ella Smith and Weinstein as well (60-36).
  • The group of Haley Burchhardt, Arielle Cleveland, Jordan Peebles, D'Amours and Grassi kept clawing away for the Bears getting the score to 69-48 with 1:51 left.
